the face where it narrows at the
chin. Round faces can be elon-
gated by wearing drop earrings
and a long necklace; rectangular
faces softened by wearing button
earrings and a drop-pendant chok-
er that adds pointed definition at
the chin. Oval faces can handle
any jewelry style — although ex-
perts suggest that brides forgo a
necklace altogether if their dress
is high-collared.
Most experts also agree that
bridal jewelry is best kept to a min-
imum, and that hands and wrists
should be free of adornment in or-
der to focus on the rings.
The best wedding rings still
sparkle, shine and dazzle — but
beyond that, anything goes for to-
day's bridal couples. Gone are the
days when every woman wore a
round solitaire and every man a
plain band of gold.
There's a mine of design op-
tions, including the likes of emer-
ald-cut diamonds set in platinum
bezel settings; round diamonds
surrounded by baguettes; royal-
cut diamonds of huge proportions
surrounded by swirls of colored
gems such as rubies, sapphires or
emeralds.
Many gold bands now are craft-
ed with intricate carvings, gems
and creative finishes: a sprinkling
of small diamonds set flush in a
brushed gold band; glistening gold
richly woven around elegant plat-
inum; an endless row of dazzling
diamonds encased between thin
gold bands.
While some designs seek to be
contemporary, others are repro-
ductions of bands worn through-
out history, including the likes of
Tyrolean floral bands and 12th
century "hands in trust" rings.
Many rings are engraved with
inscriptions — some on the out-
side surface, others on the inside.
