edding rings aren't
what they used to be.
Brides-to-be used to
be surprised with an
engagement solitaire, and the
groom with a band of gold come
wedding day. The man selected
what the woman would wear
and the woman selected for the
man — without input from the
other.
Now, however, the simple
round solitaire has given way to
bands encircled with gems or di-
amonds paired with gemstones,
and the plain gold band has be-
come carved, bejeweled and in-
tricately entwined with metallic
blends such as platinum and col-
ored gold.
Elaborate women's wedding
rings often are meant to stand
alone — without an engagement
ring — and men's rings occasion-
ally are adorned with gemstones
as large as those worn by the bride.

As a result, it's more common
for bridal couples to make their
ring selections together. Wedding
and engagement rings are avail-
able in a such a variety of dramatic
designs that it's virtually impossi-
ble to focus in on a person's style
without input from them. And, as
an added personalization, you can
forgo ready-made jewelry in favor
of hiring an artisan to design and
create one-of-a-kind works of art
for your hands.
Of course, more than hands will
be adorned with jewelry come
wedding day. Many a groom
wears a new watch or cuff links
courtesy of the bride, and nearly
every bride carefully selects just
the right earrings and necklace to
complement her dress.
Experts suggest that, to en-
sure a flattering look, brides con-
sider their face shape as well as
dress neckline. For example, heart-
