is an architect. But through his
travels, the Brooklyn, N.Y., res-
ident found a new calling —
author and publisher of Jewish
travel guides.
"Every time I would travel
abroad, I would ask, 'Is there any-
thing left of the Jewish commu-
nity?" Mr. Israelowitz said.
"Whether you are religious or not,
you want to know, 'Where is the
shul?"'
Realizing that there weren't
many guidebooks available that
addressed just those kinds of ques-
tions, Mt Israelowitz decided to
find the answers for himself. His
first book, Synagogues of New
York C4 was published in 1982;

he relies on local Jewish agencies
to provide him with up-to-date in-
