50th birthday last summer. At
7:45 a.m. on a Saturday, a march-
ing band led by friends and fami-
ly playing kazoos made their way
to the Rubin home. After sere-
nading Judy, the guests were treat-
ed to breakfast.
"Judy started crying when she
saw everyone, pointing to family
and friends who had come from
out of town," said Mr. Rubin. "I
wanted to do something a little bit
different for her, but something
she would remember fondly. I
made sure everything was OK
with the city and with the neigh-
bors, and I had my office take the
responses.
"The only thing I didn't do was
tell the police, and a squad car
drove up wanting to know what
was happening. The letter from
the city did the trick so I only
messed up a little bit"
The Pike Street Restaurant was
the setting of Cathy Deutchman's
surprise party for her husband Jim
when he turned 40.
"Part of the success of keeping
it a secret was not telling the kids
until the last minute so they
wouldn't let the cat out of the
bag," said Mrs. Deutchman. She
also used a phony invitation to
throw her husband off the track
and had guests respond to her
mother's home.
"The kids were with my moth-
er and were to meet us at the
restaurant," she said. "Jim thought
we were meeting friends. When
we walked up the stairs there
were pictures of him all around
and balloons and decorations but
it still hadn't registered with him.
When we entered the main room
and everyone shouted 'Surprise!'
Jim kept wondering what his par-
ents were doing there because
they live in Florida. I think it took
half the evening for him to fully
realize that this was his party."
When Janet Stein set out to sur-
prise her mother, Dorie Miller, on

her 65th birthday, she and sister-
in-law Arlene Miller and a couple
of her mother's close friends or-
ganized a weekend of Mrs.
Miller's favorite activities.
"My mother loves to exercise,
hike and get massages, so we
planned a spa weekend for her,"
said Ms. Stein. "We sent her clip-
pings and advertising about the
spa we had booked for her, but in-
stead of taking her to the airport
we drove around town a bit and
ended up for lunch in the Detroit
area." When told what was real-
ly on tap for the weekend, Mrs.
Miller was delighted.
Scheduled events for the first
day included playing tennis, work-
ing out and a low-fat gourmet din-
ner prepared by a friend.
"We stayed overnight at the
friend's home for an adult sleep-
over," said Ms. Stein. "In the
morning we walked, watched a
juicer being demonstrated and lis-
tened to a lecture on vitamins.
Massages and facials were planned
for the afternoon, as well as ap-
pointments with a make-up ex-
pert and an astrologer. In the
evening, it was dinner with my
dad followed by comedy at Sec-
ond City. It was a very special <
weekend for her and our family
and her close friends."
Giving a surprise party isn't for
everyone, especially if you tend
to get your stories mixed up,
aren't very good at lying, or have
a tough time keeping a secret.
And even if you are a good sto-
ryteller, not everyone wants a sur-
prise party.
Lots of people prefer to cele-
brate their special life events in a
small way with family or close
friends. Some people absolutely
dislike being in the limelight, work
very hard to maintain a low pro-
file and opt for the ordinary.
So before you start planning
that surprise, be certain that the
guest of honor will enjoy it. ❑
