women should blame
evolution, say the editors of
Men's Health magazine.
Evolutionary psychologists say
men are unconsciously (or maybe
consciously) seeking women with
high reproductive value. That
usually translates into youthful-
ness and an hourglass figure.
These preferences are no acci-
dent when you consider that the
proportions of Playboy models
and beauty-contest winners have
remained the same over the
years despite the fact that their
weight has dropped steadily.
Moreover, men agree on what
makes a woman's face beautiful:
high eyebrows, prominent cheek-
bones, a small nose, narrow face
and big smile with a full lower
lip. Experts say these are uni-
versal signs of youthfulness, sex-
ual maturity and sociability.
Well, what's good for the gan-
der also applies to the goose. It
seems that women gravitate to-
ward successful men with pow-
er and money because, in
evolutionary terms, they're seek-
ing a good provider for their fu-
ture offspring.

heavy smokers suffer from even
more ear infections.
Not only do recurring middle-
ear infections mean more visits
to the pediatrician, but they can

mal speech development.
However, breast-feeding in-
fants for at least four months
offers significant protection
against ear infections.
"If a baby is breast-fed, there
is a dramatic decrease in both
acute and recurring ear infec-
tions — whether or not the moth-
er smokes," says John Ey, one of
the pediatricians who studied
more than 1,000 infants from a
health maintenance organization
in Tucson, Ariz.
While smoking mothers who
breast-feed offer their babies
some protection, it should be not-
ed that smokers produce less
breast milk and fewer nutrients
than nonsmokers. The more a
mother smokes, the less pro-
tection her milk affords the
baby.
