Dr. Jeff Dizik, a Lincoln Park
veterinarian, said cats also make
good pets because they are "easy
maintenance." However, the doc-
tor cautions those starting fami-
lies or parents with infants of the
dangers cats can pose.
Although rare, "sometimes
cats like to cuddle up next to
sleeping babies and unfortu-
nately, there have been instances
where cats have suffocated a
baby," he said.
udy Canvasser-Redmond
and her family recently
brought home Arlo, a gold-
en retriever puppy.
The Farmington Hills family
tried to implement a plan where
everyone takes turns letting out
the dog.
In their five months of puppy
ownership, Benjamin, 17, John,
15, and Rachel, 12, have been
pretty good about taking care of
the dog, but often the responsi-
bility falls on their mother.
"There is a fair amount of buck
passing," Ms. Canvasser-Red-
mond said. "It usually gets down
to who is doing something crucial
and who is free."
Their method seems to work
fine because no one is complain-
ing. In fact, the puppy gives the
family something they all agree
on.
"We spend a lot of time laugh-
ing and loving this dog," Ms. Can-
vasser-Redmond said.
When Arlo mysteriously got red
paint all over the carpet, the teens
rearranged the furniture so their
Thanksgiving company would not
notice the fresh stains.
After the Redmonds decided to
get a puppy, they did not have a
hard time deciding on a breed.
Many of their friends already
owned golden retrievers and each
raved about the temperament of
their dogs.
Deciding on a pet or breed
should be a family decision. An
animal should be picked accord-
ing to its size, the personality of
children in the house, the size of
the yard and the amount of re-
sponsibility the family is willing
to handle.
Even Jewish law has some-
thing to say about pet ownership.
Rabbi Steven Weil, of Young Is-
rael of Greenfield, said Halachah
does not allow one to eat until his
or her pets are fed first.
"Once a domesticated animal
is dependent upon us, it's our re-
sponsibility to take care of that
animal," said Rabbi Weil, who
grew up on a cattle ranch outside
Buffalo, N.Y.
If a dog or cat lives in a kosher
home, its food does not have to be
kosher, but according to Rabbi
Well the animal's meal should not
be made with milk and meat.
And, during Passover, the ani-
mal's food should not be made
