buildings are well back from the
beach front and the Sonesta
Beach Hotel, one of the few ho-
tels in the area, draws upon a
pyramidal architecture to blend
itself quietly into the environs.
It is possible to walk on the Key
Biscayne beach area from the Son-
esta Hotel westward toward the
beginning of the Rickenbacker
Causeway, a distance of about sev-
en miles, without encountering
more than a half dozen people.
The walk, moreover, can be exe-
cuted for much of the way in wa-
ters that are never more than
ankle deep and in sight of egrets,
seagulls and other water fowl and
fauna.
Beachcombing is, of course, not
the only way for walkers to exer-
cise their favorite pastime in
South Florida. Many inland ar-
eas, especially adjacent to major
hotels, offer unique walking paths.
At the Boca Raton Resort and
Club, for example, walkers will
find a sawdust and woodchip
pathway that circumnavigates the
hotel grounds and features, at pe-
riodic stops, diagrammatic in-
structions for light exercises.
The Breakers Hotel in Palm
Beach is situated closer to the
Gulfstream than anywhere along
the eastern seaboard. Combine
the year-round temperate climate
and the 140 acres of land of the
hotel and you have one of the best
walking opportunities in Florida.
The Breakers boasts more than
a hundred Amazonian hybrid par-
rots and other exotic birds, flora
and fauna on its grounds. Walk-
ing on its naturally pine-scented
pathways alone or in the compa-
ny of guided tours, is both an aes-
thetic and learning exercise. The
Breakers does not mind, more-
over, if guests leave the premis-
es to wander off to view the back
yards of the mansions that dot
Route AlA on the Atlantic coast.
One of the most well developed
inland walking facilities is the Or-
lando Hyatt Regency Grand Cy-
press, a stone's throw from
Disneyworld. In addition to the
hotel's spacious pool and statu-
aries, the Grand Cypress has sev-
eral miles of cinder footpaths that
wind along a small lake and
woodland. The rustic air, the
sounds of chirping birds and the
smell of new mown hay make a
walk at the Orlando Hyatt an in-
vigorating recreation.
There is one hotel in South
Florida which caters primarily to
busy executive-type travelers, the
Westin Grand Cypress just north
of Ft. Lauderdale. It has a sur-
prisingly attractive walking and
jogging path that is not visible
from the hotel front. It begins near
the Westin's pool area and winds
around a grassy knoll, leading the
walker to a small river which runs
along the hotel's back area. The
Wetsin's secluded walkway is an
oasis of quiet in an area that is
crisscrossed by highway and local
automobile traffic. ❑
