A kosher meal is available the next time you fly.

T

hose of us who fly while on
vacation of for vocation
know that airline food is
not like what mother used
to make.
One gastronomic alternative
to the usual airline meal or even
snack is kosher food. There is no
extra charge; every U.S. airline
offers it, and most internation-
al carriers do, too.
How do you order kosher food
for your next flight? It's simple.
You order it along with you tick-
ets directly from the airline or
through your friendly travel
agent.
If you don't remember to or-
der the special meal when you
make your reservation, you can
still do it up to 24 hours before
flight time.
Typical kosher concoctions for
breakfast are orange juice, a
Spanish omelette, roll and but-
ter, Danish pastry, coffee, tea or
milk. For a hot lunch or dinner,
the kosher menu calls for chick-
en or roast beef casserole, apple
compote and a jelly roll. The
snack is salami or turkey sand-
wich, tomato juice and a donut.
These meals all have the
mandatory O-U endorsement.
The menus change about every
month so you do get a variety of
dishes. Of course, kosher meals
are available to passengers who
fly first class, business cabin or
coach.
The source of the kosher cook-
ing for Northwest and almost all
U.S. domestically-based airlines
is Wilton Foods Inc, headquar-
tered in Spring Valley, N.Y.
According to Wilton, kosher is
one of the hottest food trends to-
day. The kosher catering com-
pany says there are as many
reasons for eating kosher en-
dorsed products as there are peo-

ple consuming them.
In addition to the people who
follow kosher dietary laws be-
cause of religious beliefs, there
is a percentage of the American
public who believe that kosher
foods represent exceptional qual-
ity, cleanliness and purity. These
people order kosher products be-
cause they believe the kosher
symbol provides an extra level
of supervision.
It is not Wilton, but the air-
lines that select the kosher
menus. So if you have a beef
about the selection, go right to
the source.
The Israeli airline, El Al, uses
a different kosher caterer in the
United States. Borenstein Cater-
ers prepare all those certified
meals. The airline recently an-
nounced a new option in glatt
kosher dining called Regal. As
with all special menus, you have
to order them at least 24 hours
in advance.
El Al also offers a Young Din-
ers Club for children ages 2
through 12. The menu for them <
features an El Al Skyburger
with french fries, corn-on-the-
cob, cole slaw, a fruit drink, a
gelatin dessert and chocolates
— all glatt kosher.
If you fly the Israeli airline
during Passover, you will get
matzah instead of bread, pota-
toes in place of other grains and
only kosher-for-Passover bever-
ages.
On El Al, a new policy offers
a free liqueur after dinner to
coach passengers. In addition to
all the special menus airlines of-
fer, El Al adds pareve, dairy and
raw vegetable selections.
For your next flight — any-
where, on any carrier — don't
settle for an ordinary meal. Ex-
periment. O
