JET "Not Great Jewish Theatre . . .Great Theatre" presents Harvey Fierstein's Jewish Women Exhibit May Arrive in Detroit CARLA JEAN SCHWARTZ LOCAL COLUMNIST hen Mary Lou Zieve of Bloomfield Hills saw the exhibit "Becom- ing American Women: Clothing and the Jewish Immi- grant Experience, 1880-1920" at the Chicago Historical Society, she envisioned this program in De- troit. The Detroit Historical Mu- seum was a natural choice for the exhibit because of its Leonard Si- mons Memorial Fund, which was established in memory of Ms. Zieve's father. Ms. Zieve is in the midst of forming a committee to work on this exciting project. Linda Sir- cus, Phyllis Strome, Shelia Garber, Lois Shaevsky, An- nette Fink and Amy Berke re- cently attended an informal breakfast meeting at the Zieve home. W Jan Wisniewski and Mary Lou Zieve at an exhibit planning meeting. "This is an exciting, traveling exhibit focusing on our Jewish her- itage," said Ms. Zieve. "Not only is it a great exhibit, but it coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Women's Division of Federation," she added. "Becomhig American Women," sponsored by the Chicago Histor- ical Society, has appeared at the Ellis Island Immigration Muse- um in New York and at the Na- tional Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia. The exhibit, based on oral histo- ries and diaries, includes artifacts, garments and photographs. It shows how immigrant women, confronted with the anguish and joy accompanying living in a new country, made choices to become American through their clothing and lifestyle. The Detroit exhibit wants to personalize the presentation by showcasing local items and offer- ing educational programs. The exhibit is scheduled to be on display at the Detroit Histori- cal Museum from November 1996 to May 1997. According to Ms. Zieve, the Society has raised $20,000, but there is a $100,000 fund-raising goal. Patrons are needed as well as committee members and artifacts.
