fifteen Jewish students and
21 Arabic students from
throughout metropolitan
Detroit were paired Mon-
day for the annual American
Arabic and Jewish Friends col-
lege scholarship contest.
The high-school seniors met at
Southfield-Lathrup High School
to be placed in groups, a depar-
ture from the past in which indi-
viduals wrote essays on what it
means to be a student of Arabic
or Jewish descent.
Students who were unable to
attend the meeting can still par-
ticipate in the scholarship com-
petition by calling Barbara Gray
at the Detroit Interfaith Round
Table, (313) 869-6306, before
March 6. The students will be
paired and must turn in a group
essay by March 29 on the topic,
"As students of American Arabic
and Jewish descent, what ac-
tivities and programs, with
recommendations for their im-
plementation, do you propose to
promote greater understanding
and cooperation between your re-
spective ethnic groups?"
Winning team members will
be awarded college scholarships
ranging from $500 to $1,500.
Ms. Gray, interim director of
the Round Table, said the con-
test had as many as 65 entrants
in the past, "but we are having a
problem this year with schools

March 6 deadline, she expects
the number of entrants to in-
crease.
Laura Berry Harris, who
chairs the scholarship contest for
the American Arabic and Jewish
Friends, said, "We believe that
by working closely together the
students will develop greater un-
derstanding of their partners'
background and culture, and es-
tablish friendships that will
bridge any gaps between the two
ethnic groups."
The students told Ms. Gray
that the best part of Monday's
session was meeting their coun-
terparts and getting down to
work.
Publicity Deadlines
The normal deadline for local news
and publicity items is noon Thursday,
eight days prior to issue date. The
deadline for birth announcements is
10 a.m. Monday, four days prior to is-
sue date; out-of-town obituaries, 10
a.m. Tuesday, three days prior to is-
sue date.
