THE RUSSIAN BALLET: OAKLAND COMMUNITY COLLEGE CLASSIC AND CONTEMPORARY ENTERTAINMENT SERIES SATURDAY, MARCH 9th, 8 p.m. MARCH 8 BLACKTHORN West Bloomfield High School Royal Oak Campus Lila Jones - Johnson Theatre 8:00 p.m. Irish Entertainment out of "The Twilight Zone," but the food was straight from the Jewish tradition. "It tasted like my mother made," laughs Perl- man. That taste for the past is no accident. Somehow, says Perl- man, in a country noted for its history of anti-Semitism, "there is an enthusiastic crowd among non-Jews for that Jewish `thing.' It's become an 'in' thing to go to a klezmer concert there." Perlman made a concerted effort to explore Krakow's Jewish heritage, performing Achron's "Hebrew Melody," ac- companied by pianist Samuel Sanders, at the Krakow Syn- agogue. "Being in Poland was a reaf- firmation of what I have always felt," says Perlman. And that is? "We must never forget what happened, and we must look to the past to assure a future." Perlman's future is certain- ly filled with concert dates. There may be a surprise or two on his summer agenda. The man who played his first electric violin during filming got such a charge from the whole experience that he's talk- ing of a possible klezmer tour next summer. "We may do three or four dates," says Perl- man of joining his kindred klez- matics. So, Itzhak Perlman, award- winning concert violinist, is far from unstrung from his first foray into klezmer. He has found a room of his own — "In the Fiddler's House." "And I'm not complaining," says the fiddler extraordinaire. ❑ 4925 Orchard Lake Road SELECTIONS: MARCH 15 BLACKTHORN PART.
