hen you walk into the
weight room at CMI
Health Club on a
Wednesday morning, it
looks like business as usual. The
machines are pumping, the peo-
ple are talking, and the class tak-
ing place seems to be quite
well-attended.
The teacher, Adam Schlecter,
1995 USA Champion Body-
builder, is teaching his Super Se-
nior class. And all these weight
lifters, as young as they might
feel, are not really young at
all.
"The average age in this class
is 75," says Mr. Schlecter, who
was the runner-up for Mr. Amer-
ica this year. "We have people
well into their 80s."
The fact that this class is de-
signed for older people or that it
is consistently one of the busiest
classes offered at CMI should not
be surprising. The trend in senior
fitness has been catching on for
years.

"When you get older, your
muscles tend to tighten up, so it's
very important to stretch out and
use those muscles. I've seen peo-
ple come into this class who walk
with canes or suffer from arthri-
tis, and months later, they have
built enough strength and flexi-
bility to walk on their own," Mr.
Schlecter says.
The class is an hour of stretch-
ing all the major muscle groups
in the body, followed by free
weights, machines and floor
work. When the hour is over, Mr.
Schlecter offers the seniors ad-
vice on nutrition, health or what-
ever ails them.
"Adam taught me the right
way to get out of my car," says
Natalie Victor of Huntington
Woods. Mrs. Victor could only get
around with a walker last year.
Today, she works out five days
a week and needs no help to
walk.
"I really had to learn not only
to do things, but to do them the
