Lawyer Hailed
For His Response

London (JTA) — A Jewish
lawyer was hailed as a hero for
a courageous act after an Irish
Republican Army bomb ripped
apart a London bus.
For Raymond Levy, who
helped to turn off the engine of
the shattered bus, being caught
up in a bomb blast was not a new
experience.
When the IRA bombed the
Baltic Exchange in April 1992,
Mr. Levy was badly cut by flying
glass as he ate dinner near the
Bevis Marks Synagogue.
He was due to conduct, in the
rabbi's absence, the following
morning's service at the historic
synagogue.
However, the synagogue suf-
fered major damage and Mr.
Levy spent Shabbat at the Roy-
al London Hospital.
Fourteen years earlier, he had
driven within 20 feet of a bomb
that exploded in a garbage bin in
a street in Manchester.
"I've been through it all be-
fore," he said, after returning to
work.
Mr. Levy, 35, was driving
home when his car was hit by de-
bris from the bus explosion. But
he quickly made us of his long-
time interest in transportation.
"I am fascinated by buses and
cars," he said, adding that he
knew that the bus "had its en-
gine cut out at the back."
Unable at first to locate the
lever, he enlisted help from a
passing taxi driver. Together,
they disconnected the engine.
"My main concern was to pre-
vent the bus fuel from igniting
and causing further conflagra-
tion."

New York (JTA) — In the latest
sign of warming ties between Is-
rael and Tunisia, Israeli Prime
Minister Shimon Peres recently
wrote a letter of holiday greeting
to the president of the North
African Muslim nation.
The letter, in which Mr. Peres
said he prays "to the Almighty
that all children of Abraham
may live in peace and fraternity
in our region," is believed to be
the first such high-level corre-
spondence between the two coun-
tries.
The letter to President Zine al-
Abidine Ben Ali came at the end
of the month-long Ramadan hol-
iday.
After several fits and starts,
Israel and Tunisia agreed last
month to establish low-level
diplomatic relations by ex-
changing interest sections.
Tunisia will open an interest sec-
tion in Gaza as well.
