he Jewish Community
Center of Metropolitan De-
troit has won its second
consecutive Midwest JCC
basketball tournament and third
in the last five years.
The Detroit JCC team, under
Coach Barry Bershad, is 30-0
over the last two seasons in local
and tournament play. Of 12 play-
ers on the roster, 10 are students
at West Bloomfield High School.
Bershad was assisted by Tony
Sanders.
Jonah Amsel was voted the
Cleveland tournament's most
valuable player. In the final
game, a 61-57 win over Pitts-
burgh, he scored 30 points, in-
cluding 14 of 15 free throws.
Several were in the final minutes
of the tight contest. Amsel was
also the team's leading scorer in
a 61-44 tournament defeat of
Dayton.
Named to the all-tournament
team with Amsel were off guard
Jason Wexelman and center
David Askew. Wexelman led
with 21 points in the opening
round 65-53 victory over Cincin-
nati and Askew had 17 rebounds.
Bershad believes the third-
round game against Canton was
critical. Down by nine points late
in the third quarter, Detroit ral-
lied to a 57-45 win, with Marion
Hodges scoring 15.
Other players on the Detroit
team included Michael Brann,
Jeff Epstein, Garrett Field,
Michael Florkowski, Jeremiah
James, Jon Mamat, Jeff Schmidt
and Evan Rice.

The Andover junior also had

Barons and finished second in
scoring in the league. The team
finished the regular season as di-
vision champions and defeated
Lahser High twice to win the
Bloomfield Hills championship.
Andover was scheduled to
open the single-elimination state
playoffs on Feb. 28 against Cran-
brook.
