his sedrah, with its de-
scription of the sanctuary,
proceeds to deal with the
requirements of those who
were to minister in the sanctu-
ary.
Special provision was made for
the eternal light, which was to be
kept burning continually because
no sunlight fell into the sanctu-
ary. The lamp is represented in
the synagogue today by the per-
petual lamp burning before the
ark. The eternal light was always
to be a symbol of Israel whose
mission it was to become "a light
unto the nations."
The rest of the sedrah deals
with the special vestments of the
priests ministering before the al-
tar: the ephod, the breastplate,
the robes and priestly garments.
Since this sedrah comes just
before Purim, special readings
from the Torah are stipulated.
"Remember Amalak:" the words
of Deuteronomy caution Israel al-
ways to remember Amalak and
what the Amalakites did to the
Israelites just when they were
leaving Egypt. The memory is of
the perpetuating of a cowardly
and unprovoked attack on the
Jewish people, on those who were
straggling at the end of the line
as the Israelites marched out of
Egypt. Amalak was identified
with Haman. Thus, the portion
is prescribed for reading just be-
fore Purim.
Purim is a happy festival of
merrymaking. Like Chanukah,
Purim celebrates the deliverance
of the Jewish people from de-
struction. This time it was from
Haman, chief adviser to the king
of Persia, with the story told in
the Book of Esther. The story is
read not as accurate history but
rather as another example in his-
tory when the Jewish people
were delivered from annihilation
by a faithful few, such as
Mordechai and Esther. .
The serious meaning of Purim
is not forgotten. In every gener-
ation, throughout the long histo-
ry of the Jewish people, evil men
have come to power, such as
Pharaoh, Haman and Antiochus,
who sought to destroy Jewry and
erase Judaism from the minds of
men. But in every generation, de-
liverance came through the hero-
ism of devoted Jewish men and
women who set the example for
the hard-pressed Jewish people.
The steadfastness and courage of
Mordechai and Esther in the Per-

Shabbat Zachor:
Exodus 27:20 - 30:10 -
Deuteronomy
25:17-19
Samuel 15:2-34.

The word zachor, remember,Z\
is applied not only to the ancient
story of Purim or the time when
the Amalakites attacked the Is-
raelites, but also in our own time.
The word zachor has been iden-
tified with the Holocaust: never
to forget what the beastly Nazis
did to the Jewish people in the
20th century. A little pin of He-c(
brew characters.- of zachor is
sometime worn by people who
want to identify with the move-
ment to remember — remember
what Aamalak did and remem-
ber the Jewish people of the Holo-
caust. ❑
