Steve Morton, Heidi Savon and Ilene Lubin plan a board for BBYO on Display.

Jewish Community Center.
Organizers hope the display
and its accompanying program-
ming will bring teens from all
Jewish backgrounds and affili-
ations into the organization's
Aleph Zadik Aleph (AZA) for
high-school boys, B'nai B'rith
Girls (BBG) for high-school girls,
or Teen Connection, geared to-
ward seventh- and eighth-grade
students.
Currently, the Michigan re-
gion of this youth-led organiza-
tion is made up of over 800
members from throughout the
metropolitan Detroit area, Ann
Arbor and Windsor.
The display also serves a sub-
tle function. Given the financial
realities of nonprofit organiza-
tions, BBYO must strive to main-
tain its funding and operate in a
self-sufficient manner.
Although the showcase is a not
a solicitation event, Ilene Lubin,
vice chair of the BBYO board,
hopes educating the community
now will help the organization
when it does fund-raise.
Eighteen exhibits, highlight-
ing different aspects of BBYO,
will decorate the lobby of the
JCC.
Ms. Stern spent the last few
weeks collecting pictures to put

on her "Chapter Meetings" dis-
play board.
Other boards depict the an-
nual BBYO kick-off dance, Jew-
ish Heritage Nights and the
regional convention.
BBYO on Display, in addition
to the exhibit, includes an
adviser-recognition and commu-
nity night, an open house and a
parent orientation.
Because the youth organiza-
tion acknowledges it is often the
parents who are responsible for
their son or daughter's initial in-
volvement, parents are being in-
vited to participate in much of
the programming.
"I think there is a common
misconception about BBYO," Ms.
Lubin said. "A lot of people think
it's social, but there is more to it.
The teens have a tremendous in-
volvement in group activities that
teach leadership, self-esteem and
informal Jewish education."
Board member Steve Schanes
added, "If they experience Jew-
ish life at an early age, they
come away with unique experi-
ences." O

Go easy on your heart and start cutting back on foods that are high in saturated
