JENNIE (GUTOV) WERBE,
87, former Detroiter of Amherst,
Mass., died Feb. 23. Mrs. Werbe
was a graduate of Northwestern
High Sschool; She received a
bachelor of arts degree in social
work from the University of
Michigan. Subsequently, she
completed studies at the Chil-
dren's Orthopedic Center in De-
troit and worked as a case work-
er for the city.
When she moved with her
family to New York City, she be-
came active in the League of
Women Voters and with the
United Nations. In Amherst,
she served on the town's Select
Committee on Goals and the
Transportation Committee.
Mrs. Werbe was the daughter
of the late Nathan and Ella
(Druckman) Gutov. She is sur-
vived by her husband Raymond
A.; son, Peter A. of Oak Park;
daughter, Susan E. of Newton,
Mass.; granddaughter, Kather-
ine A. Werbe-Bates of Newton.
A private memorial service will
be held in the spring. Contribu-

CHARLES MORRIS WEST,
78, of Farmington Hills, died
Feb. 26. Mr. West was a CPA,
former comptroller for Boriri
Brothers Building Supplies and
financial officer for Borin Invest-
ment.
He is survived by his wife,
Edith of Farmington Hills;
daughter and son-in-law, Bar-
bara and Michael Fox of Com-
merce Township; grandchildren,
Francine and Marc Newman,
Carolyn and Richard Krafsur;
great-grandchild, Marlee Fox
Newman; sisters and brothers-
in-law, Sylvia and Henry Gilford
of Delray Beach, Fla., Sally and
Ben Levine of West Bloomfield.
Interment at Beth Abraham.

Amsterdam (JTA) — Dr.
Jacques Baruch, 78, a leader of
the Sephardi community here
and an active member of the re-
sistance against the Nazi occu-
pation during World War II,
has died.
Dr. Baruch, a rheumatolo-
gist, was active in the Jewish
community, serving until his
death as president of the Por-
tuguese Jewish congregation.
During the Second World
War, Dr. Baruch fled the Ger-
man-occupied Netherlands to
France, where he worked in the
resistance. He was captured by
the Germans but managed to
escape.
About 4,000 Portuguese
Jews lived in Amsterdam be-
fore the Holocaust. The commu-
nity has 450 to 500 members.

JENNIE WHITEMEN, 86, of
Windsor, died Feb. 16. Mrs.
Whiteman was a life member
of Hadassah-WIZO. She was
the beloved wife of the late
Bernard Whiteman. She is sur-
vived by her daughters and

Hamburger of West Bloom-
field, Judy and Jerry Eskin of
Windsor, Myrna and Steve
