Jewish Community Center

Scholarship
Essay Contest

The American Arabic and Jew-
ish Friends of Metropolitan De-
troit, a program of the Detroit
Interfaith Roundtable, has in-
stituted a new approach to con-
duct its annual essay
scholarship contest for high
school seniors.
This year Jewish and Arabic
students will be paired up to
write essays on how to foster re-
lations between the two groups.
Students from high schools in
the metro Detroit area of Ara-
bic and Jewish decent are re-
quired to attend a meeting on
Monday, Feb. 26, 4-5:30 p.m. at
Southfield Lathrup High School
to learn about and register for
the scholarship program.
Each student will be ran-
domly paired with a student of
the other ethnic background to
form a team to write the essay.
Specifically, the subject matter
for the essay is: "As students of
American Arabic and Jewish de-
scent, what activities and pro-
grams, with recommendations
for their implementation, do you
propose to promote greater un-
derstanding and cooperation be-
tween your respective ethnic
groups." The students will be-
gin working on the essay at the
meeting and will meet or be in
phone contact to complete the
essay.
The deadline for submission
of the essay is March 29. The es-
say will be submitted as a team
and the scholarship monies will
be presented to both members
of the team. The essay scholar-
ships range from $500 to $1,500.
The recipients will be an-
nounced at the Friends annual
dinner which will take place on
Sunday, June 9, 6:30 p.m. at the
Troy Marriott. Channel 50
WKBD UPN will again host a
televised program at which the
scholarships will be presented
to the students later that
month.
