left over to buy proper ingredi-
ents for the meals.
The old places continued to
have their appeal ... In fact, it
would have come as no great sur-
prise to anyone if they enjoyed a
revival next time a "new" trend
in restaurants was needed ...
More exotic trends had been
known to sweep the town, and a
little old-fashioned deli could re-
ally have been a fascinating
place.
NEW YORK will have noth-
ing on the Detroit metro area
when Tribute opens March 28, on
12 Mile west of Orchard Lake
Road ... Very trendy, upscale din-
ing with sophisticated casual el-
egance will be a large theme at
Tribute ... The key word being ca-
sual.
Although it will have all the
wanted amenities of superior din-
ing and then some (prices may be
the highest yet in this region),
waitpersons will not be in tuxedo
garb and customers will be al-
lowed to come appropriately at-
tired ... If desired, no ties
...sweaters OK ... even dress blue
jeans ... "As long as everything
will be in good taste," says Trib-
ute maitre d' and general man-
ager Mickey Bakst.
A Detroit deli had its
own flavor.
"MY DAD WILL always be
there," said Susan Muer, a true
chip off the Muer block ... So
much so that folks won't be sur-
prised also to see her wearing a
bow tie one of these days, like her
dad.
Susan was talking about the
annual Salmon Stakes that
Chuck started 18 years ago, in
1978 ... and has become Michi-
gan's longest running fishing
tourney.
It is set for April 27, 6 a.m. till
1 p.m., with prizes galore for
those that didn't get away.
Proceeds go to the Blue Water
Mental Health Clinic which, to
date, has received over $700,000
to aid troubled children, adults
and their families throughout
Michigan.
The annual Salmon Stakes are
like a tribute to the late Chuck
Muer ... He loved fishing so much
... For more info, call Ruth Rhoad-
es at Chuck Muer's Blue Water
Inn, (800) 468-3727.
IT STARTED last year with
just over a hundred people at
Botsford Inn ... Something went
wrong with mailing for this year's
second annual Slumber Party
dinner dance and silent auction
by COTS (Coalition On Tempo-
rary Shelter) at the Ritz-Carlton,
but was still attended by over 160
... More than 300 are expected to
attend No. 3, already in the plan-
ning stage for next year.
ALTHOUGH THERE has
been no grand opening yet, Clas-
sic Coney Island kosher restau-
rant has been open for business
for a number of weeks on 10 Mile
and Greenfield, in the New Or-
leans Mall.
OFFICIAL GRAND opening
of the new and impressive Sun-
day Champagne Brunch at Dou-
bletree Suites, formerly Embassy
Suites, on Franklin and Beck
roads in Southfield, is March 20.
However, it is presently open
and gathering momentum each
week ... 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m ...
with a sumptuous array of hot
and cold choices ... Adults $15.95;
children 10 and under $6.95; se-
nior citizens $14.95; and children
3 and under free.
MAIL DEPT. ... From Mau-
rey Pastor in Las Vegas ... "We
recently celebrated the fourth in-
stallation affair of our Detroit-
Vegas Club, with 75 people
joining in the festivities. A com-
plete buffet dinner, desserts, etc.,
were prepared and served by
former Detroiters Leo and Har-
riet Weiss.
"Our present officers were re-
elected for another year. Edyie
and Ray Cohen, co-presidents;
Bill and Luba Haftka, co-trea-
surers; Francis Cowell, hostess;
myself, club historian; and Bea
and Leo Fogelman, producers of
our club bulletin."
LOCAL FAVORITE and in-
ternationally noted pianist David
Syme, the Human Jukebox be-
cause of his ability to play every-
one's musical asking ... old
standards, classic rock, classical
and pop music ... now has his own
call-in show, "Play It Again,
Syme," on WHND-AM (560) Fri-
days from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. ... It
features folks calling in with
things to say and a request for
David to play.
He is currently appearing
Wednesday evenings at Joe
Muer's Grill on Southfield Road
near 13 Mile.
RICHARD GOLDEN says,
"You've got my word on it!" that
the cocktails and strolling sup-
per at Jimmy Schmidt's Chianti
Villa Lago, 123 Kercheval,
Grosse Pointe Farms, will be a
dandy ... It's to raise funds,
March 4, for Gilda's Club, Metro
Detroit, honoring the late come-
dienne Gilda Radner ... Richard
is a Gilda Club board member
and honorary co-chairperson
with Asha Blake ... $40 per per-
son ... Call Gilda's Club, (810)
851-6557.
TYPO, ERRATA, ETC.
Dept. ... Bowl-a-Drome as itemed
in recent Envoy review, was on
Dexter, not Wyoming ... The
Wyoming kegling alleys were
called Wy-7.
ANOTHER BIG COUP ...
And won't the members be hap-
py! ... Certified Master Chef
Michael Russell starts at
Wabeek Country Club on March
11.
