legacy as Detroit's premier ar-
chitect.
"The thing that's fascinated
me the most while filming this
documentary is the Fisher The-
atre building (designed by
Kahn). I now understand why
they call it the 'largest art ob-
ject,"' Nathanson said.
"I remember when my mom
took me to the Fisher when I
was 5 years old to see Fiddler on
the Roof. We went to a Saturday
matinee and we sat in the front
row, and I didn't think much
about it. Rosalie Kahn Butzel,
who's in her 80s, talks about
when she brought her grandson
and his fiance to town to see her
father's building, From the way
she describes it, I now look at the
Fisher in a different way and ap-
preciate it more."
Nathanson interviewed more
than 25 people for the show, in-
cluding Dulcie Rosenfeld and
Agnes Scott. Last year, he fea-
tured his 80-year-old grand-
mother, Martha Schechter,
and her fond memories about
Detroit.

Nathanson said, in total, about
50 tapes (30 minutes of footage per
tape) were shot, and hundreds of
historical pictures were looked
through, which Nathanson will
use to supplement the interviews.
So how much more does
Nathanson have to do before his
deadline of March 6?
"Well, we've been allotted 16
editing days. And we can ac-
complish four to five minutes of
edited footage each day. It's very
painstaking work."

II" will premiere at 8 p.m.
Wednesday, March 6, on
Channel 56 during its Pledge

Amazing Technicolor
Dreamcoat is gone, gone,
gone from Detroit, he doesn't
want his music to be too far out
of humming range.
Lloyd Webber created a new
theatrical concert experience
called The Music of the Night
that's coming to the Fox Theatre
Feb. 27-March 3. Starring Colm
Wilkinson, the first Phantom
back in England in 1985,
Wilkinson will be joined by a 32-
piece orchestra and cast of 15
singers and dancers performing
the greatest hits from Andrew
Lloyd Webber's most memorable
musicals.
An Andrew Lloyd Webber
mainstay, Wilkinson starred
in the original Toronto produc-
tion of The Phantom of the
Opera at the Pantages Theatre,
premiering September 1989
and performing through May
1994 — 1,653 performances in
all.
He created the role of Che
Guevara on the original record-
ing of Lloyd Webber's Evita and
starred as Judas in the Dublin,
London's West End and British
national tour productions of Je-
sus Christ Superstar.
In addition, Wilkinson creat-
ed the role of Jean Valjean in the
original Royal Shakespeare
Company London and Broad-
way productions of Les Miser-

ables (not a Lloyd Webber pro-
duction), earning him Lawrence
Olivier Award, Tony and Dra-
ma Desk nominations; and win-
ning the Helen Hayes Award,
the Outer Critics' Circle Award
and a 1987 Theatre World
Award for his celebrated por-
trayal.
But for those who missed
Joseph and the Amazing Tech-
nicolor Dreamcoat here at the
Masonic, have no fear. Any
dream will do, for a part of
Joseph will be alive and well
and singing in the Music of
the Night. Janet Metz, who
just completed a three-year
run as the Narrator in the
North American tour, will star
with Wilkinson. Metz, who has
over 1,000 performances to her
credit, can be heard on the orig-
inal Canadian cast recording
(which recently received triple-
platinum status) with Donny
Osmond.

Andrew Lloyd Webber's
Music of the Night starring
Colin Wilkinson will run at
8 p.m. Feb. 27-29 and March
1, at 2 and 8 p.m. March 2,
and at 2 and 7 p.m. March 3,
at the Fox Theatre in
