hend why those numbers are not
considered when calculating the
Jewish vote. More importantly,
the fact that Mario Cuomo, the
quintessential liberal, lost 37 per-
cent of the Jewish vote to Mr.
Pataki, and that New York At-
torney General Bob Abrams, a
liberal Jew, lost 41 percent of the
Jewish vote to Mr. D'Amato,
shows that Jews are hardly wed-
ded to the Democratic Party.
Similarly, California Gov. Pete
Wilson received 41 percent of the
Jewish vote while defeating
Kathleen Brown — a statewide
official with an impressive liber-
al resume and background. Three
more Republican governors —
Massachusetts' Bill Weld, Illinois'
Jim Edgar and Ohio's George
Voinovich — all won a majority
of their states' Jewish vote, yet
few people have read this in their
local newspaper.
Perpetuating inaccuracies in
congressional exit polling, and ig-
noring statewide voting patterns,
is irresponsible. It leads to the
continued marginalization of a
voting bloc that, when given a vi-
able alternative, increasingly de-
fies expectations.

Shamgar Panel
Ends Testimony

Jerusalem (JTA) — The Israeli
commission investigating the se-
curity lapses that led to the as-
sassination of Yitzhak Rabin has
completed the testimony segment
of its proceedings.
The final two witnesses ap-
peared before the three-person
Shamgar Commission, headed
by former Chief Justice Meir
Shamgar.
The witnesses, two senior offi-
cers for the Tel Aviv district, an-
swered questions about the
specific instructions police re-
ceived regarding security in the
parking area where Rabin was
shot after leaving a Nov. 4 rally.
Mr. Rabin's confessed assas-
sin, Yigal Amir, is now on trial in
Tel Aviv.
In December, the commission
sent letters to six top security of-
ficials and an assistant police
commander, warning them that
they stood to be harmed by the
findings.
The head of the Shin Bet, Is-
rael's domestic intelligence ser-
vice, at the time of the
assassination has resigned.
A Justice Ministry official said
attorneys for those who could be
implicated by the inquiry had un-
til Feb. 25 to issue written sum-
mations after which findings
were expected.
The commission is expected to
submit its findings and recom-
mendations to the government
in April.
