is the English translation of its
name — for Rishon le-Zion,
founded in 1882, was the first set-
tlement established by pioneers
from outside Eretz Israel.
A small group of 10 Russian
families was involved in a des-
perate and well-nigh hopeless
struggle to create an agricultur-
al community on the site. Their
difficulties were compounded, in
the first place, by a sheer lack of
experience in farming, although
a few of the settlers had had a few
months of training at Mikve Is-
rael ("Hope of Israel"), the first
agricultural school in the coun-
try, founded in 1870 by the
French-based Alliance Israelite.
A second, and more serious,
problem for the pioneers was a
severe shortage of water. The
wells they had dug were just too
shallow, and there was no mon-
ey left to dig deeper ones. Water
had to be imported from Mikve
Israel, at great expense, in camel-
driven wagons.
At this juncture, Baron Ed-
mond de Rothschild, head of the
French branch of the family,
came to the rescue, with an ini-
tial donation of 25,000 frances,
for deeper wells. With further
support from the baron, and the
installation of a wine cellar in
1896, Rishon le-Zion developed
self-sufficiency and eventual pros-
perity.
Today, the Cannel wine oper-
ation, which had started as a
Rothschild stepchild, is a cooper-
ative marketing enterprise, em-
bracing among its full partners
kibbutzim, moshavim and pri-
vate vineyards. Cannel possess-
es 70 percent of the Israel
domestic market and exports ex-
tensively throughout the world,
especially to the United States.
The company employs the
most advanced technology in its
wine production, as well as the
most sophisticated publicity in
marketing its products. Visitors
are welcomed for an extensive
tour of the entire process. They
can reach Rishon from Tel Aviv
in a 30-minute drive from Tel
Aviv by bus, sherut or private car.
Awaiting them are several dai-
ly tours, as well as a program of
entertainment by leading Israeli
vocalists and dance troupes.
Tours are conducted every
evening, except Friday, from 9:30
until midnight. Free, and unlim-
ited, wine tasting is, of course, a
key element in the tours; snacks
of fish and cheese are offered to
"clear the palate" between sips.
The success of the Carmel pro-
motion has inspired Israel's
smaller wineries to offer similar
tours to visitors. A good 70 miles
north of Tel Aiv, along the No. 4
highway to Haifa, is Zichron
Ya'acov, site of Jonathan Tishbi's
winery, Baron Cellars.
Mr. Tishbi is a fourth-gener-
ation viticulturalist who broke
