Chiropractic Health Hints

WITH DR. STANLEY LEVINE, D.C.

DISC DISEASE

The spinal discs are cartilage pads which sit between the vertebra
and provide most of the flexibility to the spine. Without the discs, the
spine would be a rigid column of bone not capable of bending.
The mobility that the spinal discs add to the spinal column is,
however, not without some drawbacks. By being soft and therefore flex-
- ible, the spinal discs are prone to "wear" with time and aging.
Researchers from the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at George
DR. ROBERT LEVINE Washington University found abnormal discs on CAT scans in 35% of
AND
DR. STANLEY LEVINE all age groups.
A slipped or herniated disc is perhaps the most common reason for which people
have back surgery. Fortuna . ely, other treatment alternatives such as chiropractic
manipulation are available for the treatment of disc disorders. Two recent studies
comparing manipulation to other non-surgical treatments such as physical therapy found
manipulation to be superior in treating back pain related to the disc. Many patients
receiving this type of treatment will be able to avoid difficult back surgery.
Anyone with back or leg pain should have a chiropractic evaluation for a disc disorder.
Many will find that chiropractic treatment will be the answer to this difficult and com-
mon problem.

the possibility that we might not

Ms. Lewis, according to Wash-
ington sources, has played a ma-
jor role in sharpening the political
focus of an administration that
has tended to wander.
"More than anybody else in the
campaign, she has solid Wash-
ington experience," said a lead-
ing Jewish political activist.
"She's a real pro, which is exact-
ly what this administration
needs. And she has very strong
connections to our community."

Buchanan Dilemma
Draws Response

Jewish leaders continue to ago-
nize over how to respond to the
surging presidential campaign of
conservative columnist Pat
Buchanan.
Few are satisfied that Mr.
Buchanan has retreated from his
controversial positions on Israel,
on the Holocaust and on Ameri-
cans accused of Nazi-era war
crimes. But they see few strate-
gies for effectively countering the
Buchanan phenomenon.
Groups like the Anti-Defama-
tion League, which were critical
of Mr. Buchanan in the past,
have been constrained by their
nonprofit status.
"Most of our groups are
501c3s," said Jerome Chanes, co-
director of domestic concerns for
the National Jewish Communi-
ty Relations Advisory Council
(NJCRAC). "That means they
are under an absolute ban for-
bidding them from supporting or
opposing candidates for public of-
fice at every level."
Jewish groups can publicly
challenge individuals who pose
a clear threat to democratic plu-
ralism, he said. But determining
when they cross that line can be
a "terrible dilemma" for Jewish
leaders — especially when can-
didates are careful to mute their
rhetoric as they seek votes from
broader constituencies.
Several Jewish leaders said
that for now, dealing with
Buchanan is a lose-lose proposi-
tion. If they criticize his past state-
ments that seem to suggest an
underlying enmity to Jews, they
fear bolstering a significant por-
tion of his constituency that does
think Jews are too powerful; if
they are silent about Mr.
Buchanan's record, they worry
that the views he expressed in the
past will gain new legitimacy.
"The most disturbing thing is
that we're apparently invisible
to him," said a leading Jewish
politico in Washington. "Obvi-
ously, we've been written out of
his campaign; one wonders if we
will also be written out of a
Buchanan administration, if that
is what the voters choose in No-
vember."
