marrying a gentile if the children
will be raised Jews?
First of all, surveys show that
time and again the vast majori-
ty of these homes (72 percent)
will not raise their children as

of the Jewish community. Rabbi

partner) in which the grandchil-
dren of such a couple had re-
mained Jewish in their adult
years."
But isn't it racist to say Jews
should marry only other Jews?
"Our opposition to interdating
actually is a validation of the re-
ality that Jews and non-Jews are
equally nice people," the rabbi re-
sponds. "We acknowledge that it
is possible for a romantic attrac-
tion to a non-Jew to turn into a
commitment to marriage once a
process of dating has started."

Jerusalem (JTA)— For a fourth
straight day, hundreds of Pales-
tinians demonstrated outside of
Rachel's Tomb on the outskirts
of Palestinian-ruled Bethlehem,
to protest construction of a secu-
rity wall around the site by Is-
raeli security forces.
Under the Israeli-Palestinian
peace accords, Israel maintains
security responsibility over the
Jewish shrine. The Palestinians
are opposed to the work, saying
it is causing damage to a near-
byMuslim cemetery and is dis-
rupting traffic to Bethlehem.
The demonstrators threw
stones and empty bottles at the
Israeli troops.
The crowd dispersed after
Palestinian police arrived at the
site.
