Now idealism and passion is
on the left. The overwhelming
majority of Israeli pop music
stars support the peace process,
and have become more outspo-
ken about it since the assassi-
nation.
The rebellious young idol of
Israeli rock 'n' roll, Aviv Geffen,
sang at the Tel Aviv rally where
Mr. Rabin was murdered and
has since become the symbol of
the young generation's covenant
with Rabin's memory, the peace
process, and rejection of right-
wing nationalist violence. At the
Tel Aviv concert kicking off his
latest tour, his good friend Leah
Rabin was in the audience.
At the Jerusalem memorial
gathering marking the end of
the seven-day mourning period
for Mr. Rabin, Mr. Geffen
vowed, "Yitzhak, this genera-
tion will win the battle that you
started." ❑

FEBRU AR Y

In his speech last week an-
nouncing early elections. Mr.
Peres leaned heavily on memo-
ries of the assassination. and
spoke of the inspiring reaction
by the country's youth. Mr. Ne-
tanyahu, in his response, tried
a different tack.
"We think there has to be a
great revolution in Israeli edu-
cation so as to prepare Israeli
youth for the world of tomor-
row," Mr. Netanyahu said. He
called for "a computer for every
Israeli child."
In the past, young Israeli vot-
ers were consistently found to
be more right-wing than their
parents. Starting out in the
army, their lives focused on
fighting or training to fight the
Arab enemy. The right also had
the loudest voice in Israeli pol-
itics, and an idealistic, pioneer-
ing front in the settler
movement, which spoke to
youthful political passions.
