By then, it was too late. In a
country transfixed by the Yigal
Amir trial, part 0.J., part B-
movie, the scoop was too tempt-
ing. And in the supercharged
atmosphere of Knesset election
primaries, Bar-Ilan, the acade-
mic flagship of the pro-settler
National Religious Party, will
not get off lightly. The tabloid
daily Ma'ariu ran a two-page fol-
low-up story under the banner
headline: "Bar-Ilan's 'model stu-
dent': Yigal Amir".

Even taking Bar-Ilan's ex-
planation at face value, at least
two questions remain. Even be-
fore the Rabin killing, Mr. Amir
was known on campus as a po-
litical fanatic, a member of a tiny
fringe group advocating violent
resistance to the peace process.
Did the university really want
him as its symbol for American
Jewry?
"I don't how much the Amer-
ican Friends knew," Ms. Ober-
lander replied. "They did this
completely independent of Bar-
Ilan in Israel.
The order was for pictures of
students. They had no idea of
the chosen students' back-
grounds."
But shouldn't the university
have checked everything put out
in its cause? "Absolutely," the
spokeswoman agreed. "Prior to
this event, the university didn't
look at material prepared by its
friends abroad. Now all publi-
cations have to be seen and ap-
proved by senior officials before
they go out." ❑
