ELIZABETH APPLEBAUM ASSOCIATE EDITOR

Q: I miss Moshe_ Arens, Israel's
former foreign minister, now retired.
Unlike most Israeli diplomats, his
English was excellent, and he al-
ways expressed with eloquence and
sensibility his country's positions. I
was curious about his English, which
sounds American. Where and how
did he acquire his language skills?
A: The same way you and I did

Q: I'm a big movie buff, and I've
seen many "Jewish" films from
the 19605 to the present. But what
about in the early part of the cen-
tury? Were any Jewish films made
then?
A: According to Patrick

Robinson's Guiness Facts &
Feats, the first film with an en-
tirely Jewish cast was Satan,
— right here in America. Mr. produced in Poland in 1912.

Q: Tell Me Why recently ran a
question and answer regarding Mt.
Carmel in Israel. I know about Mt.
Carmel from the Tanach. It is the
place the Jewish prophet Eliyahu
(Elijah) defeated the pagan priests
of Baal. Where I live, there used
to be a Catholic hospital called Mt.
Cannel. Why would Catholics want
to name their hospital after a
mountain
famous in Jewish histo-
ry?

A: First, classic Christian
theology regards the Land of
Israel, the ancient Jewish holy
places and the biblical
prophets as the heritage
of Christians, part of their
"new covenant," inherited after
the Jews refused to recognize
Jesus as God incarnate.
Because the Tanach notes
that Elijah lived nomadically
and wore a haircloth shirt
and wide leather belt, early
Christian writers depicted him
as a monk and the founder
of monasticism. In the early
Middle Ages, former Christian
pilgrims anti crusaders took
to living as monks in the
numerous Mt. Carmel caves
to be near the traditional
fountain of Elijah and to
continue the prophet's way
of life (minus his Judaism,
of course). By 1226, Pope
Honorius III officially recog-
nized the men as the
order of Carmelite
monks. In 1452,
an affiliate of
Carmelite nuns
was established,
with residents de-
voted to teaching
and taking care
of the sick. The
hospital in your
town probably
was run by
Carmelite nuns
— hence the
name.

Prince Charles' family
wanted only the best.
