RUTH ROVNER

SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

I

t's a balmy Friday evening in
San Juan, and in the Caribe
Hilton hotel the mood is re-
laxed and the ambiance trop-
ical.
On the Caribe Terrace, guests
sit at the bar sipping pina coladas
and admiring the sunset view.
Others get ready to sample the
barbecue buffet.
I'm about to enjoy quite a dif-
ferent dinner. The waiter pours
a glass of Domaine Baron Her-
zog Chardonnay wine and brings
a small challah. Soon my entree
arrives —juicy, kosher chicken
served with baked potato,
steamed asparagus and garden
salad.
The chicken, roasted to per-
fection, is just one choice on an
special kosher menu available in
the hotel restaurants.
Kosher cuisine and Caribbean
ambiance — it's a combination I
did not expect in San Juan. It
gives added flavor to my visit.
Of course, the capital of Puer-
to Rico offers many other plea-
sures: Old San Juan with its
distinctive Spanish charm; El
Yunque, the tropical rain forest
just 40 miles from the city; two
Jewish congregations which wel-
come visitors and more.
There's also the sweet luxury
of enjoying sunny, warm days.
Added to all this is my unex-
pected culinary travel adventure
— a Shabbat dinner with a view;

the rule: no flash cameras. In Sin-
gapore, follow the rules.
Sentosa Island is another fun
expedition. You can get to the
recreation center and amuse-
ment park by ferry or cable car.
I went by ferry ( a 10 minute
cruise) and came back by cable
car. People afraid of heights
might want to take the ferry both
ways; the cable car travels very
high in the air.
The recently remodeled Raf-
fles Hotel is a sight to see. Only
the very rich stay there (rooms
start at $400 a night), but every-
one can enjoy a visit to the world-
famous Long Bar, where the
Singapore Sling was invented.
Another hotel to visit is the
Goodwood Park. You'll find two
restaurants; if you're watching
your dollars, just stop in for tea.
If you want another kind of
Singapore dining experience, try
some of the open-air centers
where street hawkers sell their
specialties from small booths. The
food hygiene is carefully watched
by the government, and you can
safely sample the primarily Chi-
nese cuisine. ❑
