warning military contrac-
tors about the possibility of Is-
raeli espionage. The memo was
withdrawn in December because
of concerns by Defense Depart-
ment officials that it unfairly sin-
gled out Jewish employees as
potential spies.
But the Pentagon document re-
flects a broader problem: Since the
arrest and conviction of Jonathan
Pollard on charges he spied for Is-
rael, Jewish defense and intelli-
gence specialists have labored
under a cloud of suspicion.
And the movement to free Mr.
Pollard has added to the climate
of distrust, according to several
defense experts.
"Israel's decision to grant Pol-
