Trade Agreement
Signed With India

Jerusalem (JPFS) — Israel and
India signed agreements de-
signed to expand economic and
political ties.
The agreements will ease bi-
lateral trade by eliminating dou-
ble taxation and providing
Indian companies access to
Western markets via Israel's
free-trade agreements with the
United States, Canada and Eu-
rope.
It will also encourage busi-
nesses from both countries to
participate in joint ventures
in the agriculture, technology
and research and development
fields.
The agreements, which were
signed in India by Finance
Minister Avraham Shohat and
Indian Finance Minister Mah-
mohan Singh and in Israel by In-
dustry and Trade Minister
Micha Harish and Indian Corn-
merce Minister Palaniappan
Chidambaram, supplement the
1994 trade agreement which led
to a 25 percent increase in trade
in 1995, Mr. Harish said.
Israeli exports to India totaled
$300 million in 1995, while im-
ports totaled $125 million.
Mr. Chidambaram said he did
not want to offer projected trade
figures for 1996, but said that,
as a result of the agreement, 36
Israeli companies — including
Osem International, Gamatron-
ics Electronic Company and the
Paltough Limited plastics man-
ufacturer — are already sched-
uled to begin working on joint
projects with Indian companies.
Mr. Chidambaram said Israeli
companies should not be dis-
couraged by the difficulties
Bezeq had with the Indian gov-
ernment with trying to establish
telecommunication networks in
the country.
"Anyone coming after Bezeq
should be happy the road has
been cleared," Mr. Chi-
dambaram said. "The newcom-
er always has difficulties."
