TEMPLE BETH EL 7400 Telegraph Rel., Bloomfield Hills, Candidate Quits Race San Jose, Costa Rica (JTA) — When a grim-faced Luis Fish- man announced he was dropping out of the race for president of this predominantly Catholic Cen- tral American country, he closed the door on the first-ever presi- dential bid by a Jew. Mr. Fishman, a former Minis- ter of the Interior and Public Se- curity, withdrew his candidacy after the Social Christian Unity Party's leading candidate, Miguel Angel Rodriguez, asked him to abandon the campaign and, in turn, to head the party's list of candidates for the unicameral Legislative Assembly in the 1998 general elections. Mr. Fishman, 48, said he made the decision to withdraw from the race after preliminary opinion polls showed he would be unable to defeat Mr. Rodriguez in the party's primary and that the contest might hurt the unity of the party before the 1998 gen- eral elections. The same polls gave Mr. Ro- driguez, who is making his third bid for the presidency, a three-to- one margin of victory. Mr. Ro- driguez narrowly lost the presidential race in 1994. Mr. Fishman's announced withdrawal, 18 months before the party's primary but just two weeks prior to the first district caucuses, was met with resigna- tion and relief in the local Jew- ish community. Jewish leaders here saw in Mr. Fishman's campaign both a groundbreaking opportunity to improve the community's image but also a dangerous challenge to perceived anti-Semitism in Costa Rica. Mr. Fishman denied his Jew- ish roots played any role in his campaign to lead a party that traces its roots directly to Costa Rica's Catholic archbishop in the 1940's. Nor did his Judaism have any influence in his decision to withdraw from the race. Mr. Fishman got little support from the 2,500-member Jewish community, whose members generally support either the gov- erning National Liberation Par- ty or the free-market oriented Mr. Rodriguez. However, National Liberation Legislative Deputy Saul Weisled- er, whose wife Rebecca Grynspan was the first Jew elected to one of the country's two vice presi- dencies, said he was impressed with Mr. Fishman's campaign, even though he did not support it. Jose Nowalski, one of Mr. Fishman's Jewish supporters, said he saw the campaign as an opportunity to eradicate anti- Semitism and stereotypes of lo- cal Jews, although he admits Mr. Fishman himself never saw his campaign from that point of view. Soldier Fires On A Church Jerusalem (JTA) — A Tel Aviv court has sentenced a 22-year-old soldier to 41/2 years in prison for spraying a Roman Catholic church with gunfire. The soldier fired dozens of bul- lets in May 1995 in St. Anthony's Church in Jaffa. No one was hurt, but the shooting set off two days of protests by Arab residents in the Arab and Jewish neighborhood. The soldier said before his sen- tencing that he did not regret his actions. Shortly after his arrest, he had said that Jews must "destroy symbols of idol worship." YAD feed/ifg to Jewish tiorry Use this coupon to help feed the Jewish hungry.
