"She didn't agree with some of
the way JHA and its problems
were handled," said Mr. Much-
more, who would not elaborate
further.
Rep. Berman becomes the
third Jewish lawmaker to leave
Lansing in the last few years.
Sen. Jack Faxon of Farmington
Hills decided in 1994 not to seek
reelection at the end of last term
so he could devote time to the arts
and his pet project, the Interna-
tional School in Beverly Hills,
Mich.
Sen. Lana Pollack of Ann Ar-
bor gave up her seat in the state
Senate for an unsuccessful U.S.
Senate bid in 1994.
Rep. Berman, who also has
several nonpolitical affiliations,
is a member of Congregation
B'nai David, Hadassah, Jewish
Historical Society, National
Council of Jewish Women and
National Association of Jewish
Legislators.
Rep. Berman was an Oak
Park High School English
teacher before she ran for an
open state representative's seat

in 1982. She has successfully
breezed through all seven of her
elections, including her two most
recent and most successful races
where she beat her opponents by
more than 16,000 votes in one
election and over 17,000 in the
other. Even her smallest victo-
ry margin, in 1984, was a 9,000-
vote difference.
Democrat Larry Pernick, an
Oakland County commissioner
who represents parts of South-
field and Lathrup Village, said
Rep. Berman has been a constant
leader in her efforts to make the
public-education system more ef-
fective, and she has done what
she could to maintain funding for
the Southfield district.
He also praised her activism
when reapportionment came be-
fore the Legislature. "She worked
out compromises so that South-
field representation was kept at
a meaningful level," he said.
Although the filing deadline
isn't until May 14, no candidate,
Democrat or Republican, has
filed to run in the 36th House
District. A spokesperson from the
Oakland County Democrats said
that at this point it is too early to
speculate who may seek office.
A successor will replace Rep.
Berman next January. She will
stay in Lansing through the
current term, ending in Decem-
ber. 0
