The concepts of justice and fairness are themes that will continue to run through her work here in Detroit. In Delaware, Rabbi Feldman served on the board of the American Civil Liberties Union and on the Delaware Coalition for Bosnia. She has written ex- tensively on economic and so- cial issues relating to women and children. And several of her midrashic writings have been published, with another collec- tion of work scheduled to ap- pear in the spring. During her career, Rabbi Feldman has not hesitated to speak frankly on matters of public concern. In recent years, she has written editorials in the Jewish religious press on a va- riety of sensitive topics, among them: Immigration reform — "Anti- immigrant propaganda pro- motes fear of different cultures. It manipulates legitimate con- cerns for economic stability, personal safety and moral val- ues in order to breed distrust within our communities. Such is the politics of division, and history shows that Jews usu- ally do not fare well in such a climate." Bosnia — "I know there are many in our community who reject the comparison between the Holocaust and the Balkan debacle." While conceding some vast differences, she asks, "Is there a difference between con- centration camps for Jews and concentration camps for Mus- lims? Are numbers alone the defining characteristic of geno- cide? ... Is it possible that we, of all the peoples of the world, fail to recognize genocide when we see it?" Christian Coalition — "The 10 provisions in the Christian Coalition's so-called contract is nothing like ours. Our covenant demands social justice and faith in God with equal force. To love God is to give to the poor and needy. To fear God is to show deference to the aged and pro- vide justice for all. In contrast, Ralph Reed's document is about tax cuts and Christianizing c/\ America." In Rabbi Feldman's view, the rise of the religious right and related issues concerning the separation of church and state are among the most important issues facing Jews today. Leg- islation on school prayer, vouch- ers and charter schools will be high on her policy-making agenda at the Council. And she wants others in the communi- ty also to air their views. "With the challenge of reli- gious extremists, it is very im- portant that religious leaders who are not fundamentalist speak up in the public arena and let people know there is not just one religious voice in the community," she said. ❑ INCLUDING CUSTOM 30903 ORCHARD LAKE RD (in Hunter Square between 13 & 14 Mile by TJ MAM AMAZING SAVINGS & THE GAP) sale ends 2 /15/ 96 Open Sunday 11 am-5 pm Monday & Thursday 10 am-9 pm Friday 10 am-4 pm CLOSED SATURDAY SERVICE & INSTALLATION AVAILABLE GREEN page 8 ministrative detention. It is unfortunate that our own Jewish News chose not to cover the Ruth Matar visit. This is an ongoing current issue. It is the obligation of this newspaper to report it as such.
