Music Star lives An 'Unorthodox' Life MICHAEL ELKIN SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS oon after she was baptized a Christian, Dana Mase re- alized how important Ju- daism was to her. "I've been through lots of ups and downs, have had my share of hardships," says the singer. "But I was never proud I was a Jew until I was a Christian." Raised in a suburban Reform Jewish Cleveland home, Dana Mase found that Chanukah can- dles didn't shed any light on her quest for meaning; neither did the family seders answer her more than four questions. On top of everything, her par- ents handed her an unorthodox bat mitzvah gift: They divorced. Her father soon vanished from her life, sending Ms. Mase on a chase to find herself. "It so happens that I was friendly with this girl at the time who was a born-again Christian," says Ms. Mase. Born Jewish, Ms. Mase be- came Christian; her search for self-revelation led to enrollment at a missionary school and then the fundamentalist-oriented Oral Roberts University. "I felt I had to find my way," she now says. "I thought I knew it all, but I didn't have a clue about understanding Judaism, which is how I got sidetracked." But all paths lead home, Ms. Mase discovered. Disenchanted with her born-again baptism, she took a U-turn, turning her back on Christianity and redis- covering the road to her roots. Ten years ago, ensconced in New York at the age of 24, Dana Mase met a man who would join her on the journey. Barry Mase encompassed all that she want- ed in a husband; their spiritual compass, she claims, was point- ing in the right direction. It was a long road: Barry Mase traveled to Israel for a vis- it; his bride-to-be joined him. Dana Mase went through a soulful reconversion to Judaism.
