David Barenholtz hangs with a close- knit group of friends, including Wilma, Fred, Barney and Scooby Doo. furs, and ultimately was respon- sible for managing five stores. One of his clients had a habit of leaving fur coats on airplanes and other places. Barenholtz was usually able to track them down. "This lady was on the board of directors of Circle Galleries. They were really pioneers, among the first to sell animation art in the 1970s and the largest client of Hanna-Barbera, Warner Broth- ers and Disney, the three titans in the industry. This woman thought I was a good retailer, and she recommended me for a posi- tion with the company." Becoming regional director for animation art with Circle Gal- leries, Barenholtz covered a ter- ritory which included locations in Soho, Toronto and Washington, D.C. When his retail expertise with the art-animation business came to the attention of Hanna- Barbera, Barenholtz was called to join the team. In February 1995, he made the big leap, moving from Manhat- tan to Hollywood Hills with his blue-eyed Dalmation, Jack. "David has brought a renewed appreciation for our customers, respect for our characters and a sense of fun back to our market- place," says Hanna-Barbera En- terprises Vice President Tom Barreca. Business has tripled since Barenholtz joined the company. He was told that an expansion of his duties will soon include de- veloping collectibles for films. `There's no such thing as a typ- ical day," says Barenholtz, who's also worked with entertainment notables such as Gene Kelly and Harvey Korman as part of his Hanna-Barbera marketing. Kor- man lent his voice to the Great Gazoo, a Flintstones character. Kelly was in one of the Tom & Jerry movies. Both actors came to the studio to sign limited edi- tion eels. What are some of the stan- dards Barenholtz uses to choose one scene over another? "Any vi- sual which shows good motion is desirable," he says. "The scene where Astro is on the 'Treadmill to Oblivion' in the last broadcast episode of 'The Jetsons' is considered a great classic." ❑ Kick up your heels and join the festivities!
