Benjamin Netanyahu:

reached by candidates in the
Likud, and some are evening
holding joint campaign rallies.
Nevertheless, the conclusion
that nothing succeeds like media
coverage is the upshot of a poll
done by Dr. Mina Tsemach for
the mass-circulation daily Yediot
Ahronot. Not surprisingly, it
shows that the first eight of La-
bor's 10 leading primary candi-
dates are currently ministers.
Equally noteworthy is the mes-
sage that the Labor's voters are
looking forward to a younger
leadership, perhaps to balance
out the generational shift that
took place in the Likud three
years ago when Benyamin (Bibi)
Netanyahu took over as party
chairman from Mr. Shamir.
Labor's three front runners
also happen to be younger can-
didates vying for top posts in Shi-
mon Peres's next government
(assuming he gets to form one).
That, ultimately, puts them in po-
sition to succeed him as the par-
ty's next leader. Interior Minister
Chaim Ramon (who returned to
the government from the His-
tadrut after the assassination of
Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin)
and Foreign Minister Ehud
Barak (who joined the govern-
ment last summer) tied for first
place, with 87 percent. Minister
Without Portfolio Yossi Beilin
closely trails them with 86 per-
cent of Labor's membership.
The same poll shows the line-
up of the Likud's top 10 candi-
dates to be based on a mixture of
ideological considerations (hard-
liner Benny Begin is in first with
96 percent); seniority (Ariel
Sharon in fourth and Jerusalem
Mayor Ehud Olmert in ninth
place); and loyalty to the party
leader (catapulting the ambitious
