Jews have a role in this renew-
al through eating fruit with the
proper blessings and kavanah, or
concentration. From this belief,
the kabbalists instituted the mys-
tical Tu B'Shevat seder.
Trees For Zion
At the beginning of the 20th cen-
tury, Jews began to return to the
land of Israel under the banner of
the Zionist movement. Their fo-
cus was reclaiming the land,
which had deteriorated to malar-
ial swamps and desert after cen-
turies of neglect.
Keren Kayemet L'yisrael, also
known as the Jewish National
Fund, was created in 1901 to re-
store and manage the land as the
possession of the entire Jewish
people.
Planting trees was central to
reclamation. So Tu B'Shevat be-
came the time when Diaspora
Jews celebrated the greening of
the Jewish homeland. To aid that
work, they collected money to
plant trees in Israel. That tradi-

A Green Spirituality
The Torah conveys its concern for
the protection of trees in
Deuteronomy 20:19. The verse
forbids Jews, while at war, from
cutting down the enemy's fruit
trees.
From this commandment, the
rabbis developed the concept of
Bal Tashchit (Do not destroy) to
protect and conserve the natur-
al world and human-made ob-
jects.
In his book Down-to-Earth Ju-
daism, Rabbi Arthur Waskow
sees the source of a modern-day
Jewish environmentalism in the
religious injunction of Bal Tash-
chit. The antidote to humanity's
"gobbling up the earth" is spiri-
tual fulfillment, he writes.
"It is an ethic that takes seri-
ously the limits on our ownership
of any part of creation, while it
understands that only the full-
ness of spiritual life can nourish
people well enough to respect
these limits."
