Sets Celebration

The Cultural Commission of
Congregation Beth Achim will
sponsor a Tu B'Shevat Seder at
the synagogue on Monday
evening, Feb. 5, at 6:30 p.m.
There is a charge for the pro-
gram; $1 from each reservation
will be donated to plant trees in
Israel. For information, contact

Two Feminists
Will Speak

Two Israeli feminists will make a
presentation on the status of
women in Israel as part of a dis-
cussion and exchange of views at
the Friday, Feb. 9, Shabbat ser-
vices at Congregation T'chiyah,
located in the heart of Greektown.
The 7:45 p.m. service and pro-
gram will feature Irit Umanit, di-
rector of a new emergency shelter
for female victims of violence, and
Dr. Hala Hazan, director of the
Follow-Up Committee for Arab
Education. The service is being
conducted by the synagogue's Re-
ligious Services Committee.
Ms. Umanit, a certified teacher
of special education, became in-
volved with peace activism and
feminism in 1990 as a volunteer
and later a staff member at the
Isha l'Isha Haifa Feminist Cen-
ter. She coordinated projects re-
lating to employment skills for
new immigrants and a women's
health project at the center.
Ms. Hazan, who holds a doc-
torate in educational couseling
from Bar-Ilan University, is a
member of the High Advisory
Council for Arab Education and
serves on the board of the Orga-
nization of Arab Workers in men-
tal Health and the Adva Center.
Hosted by the Jewish Commu-
nity Council, the visit to Detroit is
sponsored by the New Israel Fund
and the National Jewish Commu-
nity Relataions Advisory Council.
