T

he leadership at the Jewish
Community Center is mov-
ing forward with its search
to find an executive director
for the $7 million agency.
Those involved with the search
say it's too early in the process to
speculate when a new director will
be hired, but Alan Nachman, who
sits on the search committee, said
putting the right person in place
as soon as possible is a high pri-
ority.
Once hired, the new executive
will replace the JCC's present di-
\__. rector, Leah Ann Kleinfeldt, who
'--- is stepping down for personal rea-
sons. Once a successor is in place,
Ms. Kleinfeldt will return to her
former position as the assistant
executive director. Ms. Kleinfeldt
succeeded Morton Plotnick last
year.
So far the search committee
\ has interviewed two candidates
and has two more interviews
scheduled. The committee will
schedule interviews until a viable
candidate is found.
Mark Davidoff, chief financial
officer of the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit, said all the
candidates are affiliated with a
JCC and all live outside the De-

troit community.
With the help of the national
Jewish Community Centers As
sociation, officials are looking
strictly within the Center move-
ment. But the possibility of ex-
panding the search has not been
ruled out.
Mr. Nachman would not dis-
cuss the search process except to
say it's no different than those con-
ducted by other community syn-
agogues and agencies. Mr.
Nachman also would not com-
ment on what qualifications the
committee is seeking for the Cen-
ter's top job.
`The bottom line is we are look-
ing for the best possible person for
the position," Mr. Nachman said.
"We may find someone among the
four or the search may continue.
That's indeterminate right now."
The search committee, made
up of Federation and Center lead-
ership, will make a recommen-
dation to the Center board once it
reaches a decision.
"We don't want to make a
mistake, so we are taking the
necessary amount of time to find
the right person," Mr. Nachman
said. ❑

Man's Call For Help
Does Not Go Unheard

hen Oak Park neigh-
bors of 50-year-old
David Rubin learned
that he needs up to
$100,000 for a bone-marrow
transplant, they responded by
\ sending appeals for help to Jews
/-- in metro Detroit.
The first 900 letters raised
more than $5,000 in seven days.
Another 1,800 appeals were
mailed last Friday.
"We are overwhelmed every
day when the mail comes. I can't
tell you how much. It's incredible
• to us and we are very grateful,"
/-1 says Tova Rubin, David's wife.
Local children also have re-
sponded to the need. In three
days, students at the Sally Allan
Alexander Beth Jacob School for
Girls donated more than $300 in
baby-sitting money.
Boys at Yeshiva Beth Yehu-
\_, dah wrote get-well wishes and
/J contributed money. Other young
people started drives for return-
able pop cans and bottles.

From Providence Hospital in
Southfield, where Mr. Rubin un-
dergoes chemotherapy, Mrs. Ru-
bin says her husband expresses
thanks and especially loves the
cards.
"It's a contact he didn't have
before," she says. "We have a very
small family. He rarely got a let-
ter."
Esther and Abe Schwartz
were two of 15 concerned neigh-
bors who signed their names to
the letter for help. They were
shocked and grateful over the re-
sponse. Particularly touching,
Mrs. Schwartz says, was a letter
from a 78-year-old stroke victim
who offered Mr. litibin money as
well as optimistic words of hope
for his recovery.
"There's a good world out
there," Mrs. Schwartz says. "No
question about it."
Mr. Rubin was diagnosed with
leukemia in 1991. That year, he
