Individual hairs appearing from
your scalp without surgery

The Miracle of New HAIRLINE SYNTHESIS TM

Who would have ever thought you could achieve the best possible results of a hair transplant
without surgery? That's the miracle of new Hairline Synthesis, the non-surgical hair replace-
ment technique that's revolutionizing the industry. Think
of it: individual hairs emanating from your scalp to create
a new, totally natural-looking hairline. The hairs actually
progress in density from the leading edge of the hairline
through the temporal areas, just like real growing hair
does. And if Hairline Synthesis is this effective in recreat-
ing a hairline, think what it can do for a balding crown
area. Call today for a free private consultation.

returned.
Doctors give Mr. Rubin a 50
percent chance of surviving a sec-
ond bone-marrow transplant,
which must take place by this
spring. Mr. Rubin needs a donor
with a compatible blood type.
The Rubins, who have few
close relatives, thank communi-
ty members for getting involved.
According to their neighbor
Joanne Lorkis, who also helped

with the fund-raising letter,
many more people want to lend
support. She says:
"Those who know David, or
who knew him a long time ago,
have approached us to say, 'I'm
so sorry you put out that letter
without us. We would have liked
to have signed it, too."' ❑

The Word Is Out:
Reading Machine's In

RUTH LITTMANN STAFF WRITER

T

he West Bloomfield Town-
ship Library now features a
contraption for the vision-
impaired. It's high-tech, but
user friendly, says Librarian Do-
lores Silverstein.
Called a Kurzweil Reading
Edge, the machine converts typed
words into spoken English.
It looks like a copier. Users sim-
ply place a book or magazine face-
down on its screen. The computer
scans the text, and at the press of
a button, a voice recites back what
is written, out loud or on cassette
tape.
Users choose the pitch and gen-
der of the voice. Each page of text
is scanned in less than one
minute.
The machine reads almost any-
thing typed — even recipes — but
not newspapers. Columns of
newsprint interfere with its abil-
ity to scan, Ms. Silverstein says.
The librarian is particularly ex-
cited about this new addition be-
cause it widens reading
opportunities for elderly people,
many of whom live nearby at
Fleischman and Hechtman resi-
dences.
"We feel it's a service to the
community. Everybody is equal
and we want to provide equal ac-
cess to the library for all," she says.

Have a tattered copy of some
childhood favorite you'd like to
hear just for the sake of old
times? You might not find it in
the books-on-tape section of your
favorite bookstore, but the Read-
ing Edge can help you out.
"Books-on-tape have been
helpful (in allowing the vision-
impaired access to reading ma-
terial)," she says. "But, even
though there are more books-on-
tape than there used to be, the
choice is still limited."
The $5,550 Kurzweil Reading
Edge will be available to the pub-
lic in the West Bloomfield Town-
ship Library's Access Center. It
was funded partially with a fed-
eral grant.
The grant also helped fund the
purchase of another device which
helps vision-impaired people look
up reading materials in the li-
brary's online card catalog. The
Artie Ultrapack and Magnum
GT magnify the computer screen
and use a speech synthesizer to
tell the library user which books
they can find and where. ❑
