THE ENVOY CAFE

Casual Dining

DAILY LUNCH &
DINNER SPECIALS

at Schoolcraft College, Oakland
Community College, Macomb
County Community College and
Henry Ford Community College.
The schools will each send a
group to compete against the oth-
ers at the extravaganza, which
will have a "Celebrating Mardi
Gras" theme ... The winner will
receive extra scholarship money
for its school's program ... Local
restaurant reviewers will judge
a competition among the restau-
rants.
Tickets are $65 per person
(general admission) and $125
(gold patron) per person ... both
available by calling 810-463-9660.
IT WAS Nifty Norman's for 25
years ... on South Commerce,
north of Pontiac Trail in Wolver-
ine Lake ... and after the new
ownership in 1993 of Debbie
Miesel, the menu and mood of the
restaurant has gradually
changed.
Even a new name now ...
Nifty's ... and an up-to-date menu
that has Southwestern dishes,
light fare, children's dishes and
gourmet items ... Quite a far cry
from the family tavern ham-
burgers and pizzas.
WHITEFISH has taken a
palate-pleasing leap onto the
tastebuds of customers at Nor-
man's Eaton Street restaurant in
Birmingham, owned by Bonnie
and Norm LePage.
It is now on the menu in a big
way ... with at least five different
preparations for yummy con-
sumption ... Planked, with

Authentic Italian in
Windsor.

duchesse potatoes; potato en-
crusted, baked on a bed of crispy
golden potatoes, topped with a
creamy leak sauce; grenoblaise,
with capers and onions; meu-
niere, sautéed with lemon and
butter; and heart healthy with
sesame Dijon crust.
COCO'S KORNER ... "Okay,
so I'm not invited to the seventh
annual Bow Wow Champagne
Brunch by Michigan Humane So-
ciety, April 4, noon to 3:30 p.m. at
Ritz-Carlton, Dearborn. It doesn't
mean other pooches won't be
there, and that makes me feel aw-
fully good 'cause nobody can yell
discrimination.
"Some MHS tail-wagging ca-
nine celebrities will make ap-
pearances. The Simone Vitale
band will be there, too. Sorry, no
doggie treats, but plenty of cham-
pagne and gourmet food for hu-
mans.
"Bet a bone you didn't know
that Michigan Humane Society
takes care of 85,000 homeless, in-
jured and needy dogs every year.
All proceeds from the Bow Wow
brunch go to help them. Mini-
mum donation is $125 per per-

son. Call Mary Mueting, 810-852-
7420, and she'll have whatever
info you want. I'd give MHS my
allowance for a year but they
don't take doggie cookies."
DISA 'N DATA ... Too bad
that beautiful bar Chuck Muer
had at his former Bloomfield
Charlie's and Pal's, on Maple off
Orchard Lake Road, was taken
out by the Red Robin people ...
Looks like the C.A. Muer Corp.
may be back in the same spot as
a Big Fish operation ... It's defi-
nite that East Side Mario's will
open at the former Bangkok Club
on Southfield Road, north of 12
Mile, in the Southfield Commons
... Norm LePage owns the Michi-
gan franchise.
Norma Jean Bell and the Star
Band is now downstairs in Arri-
va Ristorante's Green Room on
Friday and Saturday evenings,
12 Mile between Mound and Van
Dyke ... Two shows each night, 9
p.m. and 11 p.m. ... $7 music
charge as she performs her
unique mix of rhythm and blues,
pop, rock and light jazz ...
Fifth anniversary party by Ar-
riva is Feb. 7, 8, 9 and 10, with
the four-day celebration featur-
ing return of Lorio in concert, the
group that included Arriva co-
owner Sam Locricchio and
songstress Sandra Mandella
It'll be accompanied by Johnny
Trudell's big band ... Also free food
stations from 6:30 p.m. ...
This time for sure they say ...
Name of their new catering hall
on Drake Road by the Big Dad-
dy's gents will be Parthenon
House ... Its 50-seat restaurant
inside will be called Drake Chop
House ... Cafe Lamour in the Wy-
att Building, Northwestern High-
way and Beck Road, now
cafeteria-style, will soon be a full-
service sit-down operation, open
for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
It's the year of the rat as Chi-
nese restaurants prepare for the
Chinese New Year in February
... Sahara West Middle Eastern
food takes over the former Russ-
ian Bear spot ... and Chan's
Eatery, Chinese, opens at the pre-
vious Rikshaw locale ... Both will
unlock their doors around March
1, in the soon-to-be-remodeled Or-
chard Mall on Orchard Lake
Road south of Maple ... It's almost
99 percent sure that Joe Vicari
will open another Andiamo oper-
ation on the Northwest (in a
choice location) ... Ace pianist
David Syme opens this Wednes-
day, Jan. 31, at Joe Muer's Grill
on Southfield Road for every
Wednesday appearances, 7 p.m.
to 11 p.m., except when he is on
tour.
REUNION DEPT. ... Temple
Beth El's confirmation class of
June 1937 is planning a 60-year
get-together in June of 1997 ... In-
terested classmates should call
Caroline (Somlyo) Miller, (810)
851-9136 or (810) 553-2390, or
Alan Nathan,- (810) 647-4172 or

You could lose things
like extra weight. High
blood pressure. And high
blood cholesterol levels.
The very things that con-
tribute to heart attack and
stroke.
All you have to do is in-
vest wisely at the super-
market.
Buy more in the fresh
produce, pasta, breads
and cereals sections. And
purchase fish. poultry and
lean meats instead of fatty
or processed meats.
Switch to low-fat dairy
products and margarine.
And check the nutritional
listings on food labels.
In short, be selective
about how you play this
market. Because no mat-
ter how much you lose,
you've got a lot to win.
