WOMEN FOR ISRAEL'S TOMORROW
This doesn't mean that he
would do a bad job, but it does
;suggest that part of his appeal is
the fact that he is what he seems
-to be — an intelligent, concerned
rich guy who hasn't been dirtied
by real life.
The sudden interest in his
campaign reflects our intolerance
for imperfection — our quest for
.an unblemished, perfectly con-
sistent fantasy candidate.
We snipe at Mr. Dole's flip-
flops, which seem comical and a
bit shady; we deride Mr. Clinton's
lack of backbone, and lap up each
new accusation in the Whitewa-
ter scandal, a kind of political nar-
cotic that helps us forget about
the complex connections between
politics and the problems we face
in real life.
That leaves us only candidates
who are blank slates, a perfect
prescription for demagoguery.
' That's a chilling prospect for a
Jewish community that has tra-
ditionally been the favorite target
of demagogues, democratic and
authoritarian alike
Luckily, Mr. Forbes appears to
be anything but a demagogue.
But the point holds; by holding
candidates to standards that are

impossible to meet in the real
world, we encourage those with
no experience in governing and
no political track records, whose
positions on key issues have been
forged in campaign strategy ses-
sions, not through the hard ex-
perience of governing.
So Mr. Forbes, if he beats the
odds and unseats Mr. Clinton,
would come to the White House
without a shred of foreign policy
experience. His strong pro-Israel
position paper is reassuring, but
position papers are no substitute
for participation in the tough give
and take of real diplomacy.
Mr. Forbes's tax plan is an in-
teresting abstraction that tells us
absolutely nothing about how he
would deal with the harsh trade-
offs and competing interests that
come into play every time we fid-
dle with government financing
and spending.
Mr. Forbes insists that he is a
social moderate. But many econ-
omists say his flat tax would sig-
nificantly reduce federal
revenues; the results would al-
most certainly include new and
even more Draconian cuts to
health and welfare programs.
And that could represent the
intensification of a communal
emergency that is anything but
abstract to thousands of Jews
around the country. El
