ALWAYS ON THE GO! News WITH The Original Plan Was Not Murder Transportation Jerusalem (JTA) — In a new twist in the investigation into Yitzhak Rabin's assassination, the student who confessed to the murder told investigators this week that he had only intended to cripple Mr. Rabin in an effort to remove him from the politi- cal arena. Yigal Amir made the state- ment during an interview con- ducted in his jail cell by two investigators who were gather- ing information for the Shamgar Commission, the state panel of inquiry into the Nov. 4 assassi- nation. "I am incapable of killing in- nocent people. My intention was not to kill" Mr. Rabin, Mr. Amir reportedly said. "Paralyzing him also would have been good. That's why I did not shoot him in the head and aimed for the spine." The 25-year-old law student also told the investigators that even on the night of the Nov. 4 peace rally in Tel Aviv, he had not known whether he would be able to carry out his plan to shoot Mr. Rabin. Mr. Amir's trial on charges of slaying Mr. Rabin is scheduled to resume Jan. 23. He has not yet entered a plea to the charges against him. Mr. Amir is also being tried along with his brother Hagai and friend Dror Adani on charges of conspiring to assassinate Mr. Ra- bin, of planning attacks against For more information about The Trowbridge and our Transporation Services Call Meg or Maria at (810) 352-0208 24111 Civic Center Drive • Southfield, Michigan 48034 ELECTROLYSIS THE MOST EXCITING KNITTING & NEEDLEPOINT Rochelle Imber's Knit, Knit, Knit Specializing in Body & Facial Hair Removal for Men & Women Call for Free Consultation C) CC D uJ 54 Victoria Palace R.E. The judges in the case post- poned the date for that trial un- til April 17. The three defendants have Feb. 26 to enter their pleas. The judges also ordered that Hagai Amir and Adani be held in custody until the conclusion of the legal proceedings against them. During the hearing, the attorney for Hagai Amir charged that a well-known political ac- tivist in the territories had acted as a go-between for Yigal Amir to obtain rabbinic approval for the assassination. The lawyer refused to name the alleged go-between. The judges dismissed the charge af- ter reading the materials pre- sented by the lawyer. The Israeli media reported that the person was Benny Kat- zover, a leading activist in the Yesha Council, which represents Jewish settlers in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Mr. Katzover strongly denied the claim, saying that he had met Yigal Amir a few times during protests in the territories, but that he had never been any kind of mediator. Mr. Katzover said he was con- sidering bringing a libel suit against Hagai Amir's attorney over the matter. Two Priests Declared Martyrs Rome (JTA) — The Vatican has declared as martyrs an Austrian and a German, both Roman Catholic priests who died at the hands of the Nazis. The declaration, announced in a Vatican statement, could even- tually lead to the canonization of the two priests. Pope John Paul II attended the ceremony. Austrian priest Otto Neurur- er was tortured to death at the Buchenwald concentration camp, the statement said. German priest Karl Leisner was ordained in 1944 while he was a prisoner at Dachau. He died in August 1945 from a lung disease he contracted there. The two men were part of a group of 12 Roman Catholics from various countries and var- ious times in history to whom miracles, martyrdom or "heroic virtues" were formally attributed by the Vatican department that examines candidates for saint- hood. The pope recently said that he would announce this summer that an anti-Nazi German priest, the Rev. Bernhard Lichtenberg, would be put on the path to saint- hood. The Rev. Lichtenberg, who died en route to Dachau, de- nounced the Nazis from his Berlin pulpit and closed his ser- vice with a prayer for the perse- cuted Jews. c=\ /
