The bull market of 1995 grew
the average stock fund by more
than 22 percent. Returning to our
hypothetical model, the stock por-
tion of our pie now exceeds the
initial 50 percent allocated for
stocks. In this instance, reallo-
cating money on an annual basis
to reflect the proposed percent-
ages forces the sale of stock prof-
it and the purchase of flat
international shares. Reallocat-
ing can be done within a few
large families of funds to avoid
excess sales commissions.
The hypothetical investment
model forces one to buy low and
sell high in order to maintain the
same allocation distribution.

But without a game plan, in-
vestors fall into the "greed-fear
cycle." Many observe a market
boom and decide to buy in using
their savings dollars. As the cy-
cle crests and the market cor-
rects, investors panic and sell at
a loss.
In the best scenario, making
money should be like playing on
a well-coached hockey team
where everyone stays in position.
Mutual fund managers work the
front lines buying and selling
stocks and bonds. My role is that
of a defensive player between in-
vestors and the managers. The
client, like a goalie, watches net
results. ❑
