Steven H. Simons: Group SAA president.

"I sent a package featuring the
AQHM catalog to the halls of
fame for baseball, football, bas-
ketball and hockey," he says.
"The Cooperstown people called
me and said they liked what they
saw and wanted to see more. I
said, 'Why don't you send me
some of your merchandise. We'll
do a design and some layouts.'
They agreed, and it wasn't long
before we secured the contract."
The one-year contract with the
Baseball Hall of Fame calls for
Group SAA to develop and pro-
duce three catalogs this year —
a spring catalog that will be is-
sued in March; an induction cat-
alog to be released in late
summer to coincide with the Hall
of Fame's annual induction cer-

emony; and a holiday catalog,
which will be distributed in Oc-
tober.
Mr. Simons, 43, says his com-
pany's approach to the catalogs
will incorporate "a nostalgic per-
spective on the history of the
game and all its great traditions."
Group SAA Limited opened in
1973 as a full-service advertising
agency. After about seven years
of modest success, the agency
took on several catalog projects.
Mr. Simons soon discovered that
catalog production was an at-
tractive niche market.
"Every time I went to compete
for an advertising account, there
were 200 other full-service agen-
cies in line with me," he
says. "But when I went in
for a catalog job, and sold
Group SAA as a catalog
specialist, I had very little
competition. It makes a lot –/
more sense to compete na-
tionally with two or three
other companies than to
duke it out with 200 agen-
cies from your own back
yard."
According to Mr. Si-
mons, Group SAA is now
the largest producer of cat-
alogs in Michigan. The 35-
employee firm develops
creative concepts and pro-
vides writing, layout, illus-
tration, photography and
mailing services.
Group SAA's specialty is
producing catalogs that
feature college athletic ap-
parel and licensed mer-
chandise. Its clients include
27 universities, including
U-M, Purdue, Northwest-
ern, Penn State, Kansas
State and Florida State.
`That makes us the lead-
ing catalog producer in the
field," Mr. Simons says.
"And that part of the business is
still growing. By the end of the
year, we hope to be doing cata-
logs for 40 colleges."
Among its other accounts are
the Morley Candy Co., gift com-
panies, travel agencies and lug-
gage manufacturers.
Variety is the spice of life, and
Group SAA undoubtedly has it,
but it's clear Mr. Simons regards
the Cooperstown contract as his

coup de grace.

"I've been a big baseball fan
since I was a little kid," he says.
"If someone had told me a few
years ago that I'd be doing Coop-
erstcwn, I would have said,
`Yeah, sure.' But here I am. It's
really a dream come true."
