and official state policy that in-
mates are detained for the ex-
press purpose of making society
safe.
During the past 15 years, I
have actively been involved with
prison chaplaincy on a volunteer
basis. I have encountered many
men and women who have made
mistakes, some quite heinous.
Not one of them should be de-
nied the opportunity to do teshu-
va, come back to their Jewish
roots.
What benefit might this have,
I hear you asking. Just to quote
a small statistic, of the dozen or
so men and women with whom I
have had personal contact while
in Michigan, none who has been
released has returned. That's
zero percent. The state average
for recidivism is currently reach-
ing 66 percent.
Programs run by Chabad Rab-
bis Yisroel Weingarten in Flint,
Yusef Weingarten in Grand
Rapids and Levi Shemtov in
West Bloomfield all have had
similar if not identical results.
Prisons worldwide are filled
with missionaries of all denomi-
nations, waiting for the golden
opportunity of luring a Jew into
their midst. By at least showing
these inmates that the Jewish
community does indeed care for
them, there is still hope that they
may rejoin the community as ac-
tive contributors.
Why, you may ask, if this pro-
gram is so successful, is the state
not running after us, begging us
to help with prison reform? We
have collectively been trying to
elicit the help of the Jewish com-
munity in this cause.
Like the state, the Jewish com-
munity feels this to be too small
a problem to invest time and/or
money. People must be made to
understand that by not giving
these men and women something
of which to feel proud, something
to carry with them in the real
world, we are giving each of these
inmates a life sentence.

Gentle Reminder

This letter is written not to crit-
icize but to gently remind our
community leaders that service
to others is indeed a privilege.
That with that privilege comes
a duty and obligation to act in a
responsible and trustworthy
manner (in other words, to be a
"mentsh"). With all of the recent
cutbacks, layoffs, etc., it seems
completely out of line to rent of-
fice space for Dr. Plotnick. Per-
haps there may be a little
inconvenience involved here, but
certainly this rental money could
better be used in more necessary
areas.
