CANTOR JACOB BARKIN,
81, of Pompano Beach, Fla.,
died Jan. 17. Cantor Barkin
was one of the founders of the
Cantors Assembly of America.
He achieved acclaim as a
classical tenor performing in
concert with major sym-
phonies around the world. In
1988 he was honored by the
State of Israel for his contribu-
tions as a performing artist;
he was awarded the Prime
Minister's Medal of Honor. The
Cantors Assembly awarded
him the Yuval Award for his
distingusihed career and, in
1985, the Kavod Award as he
celebrated his 50th year as a
cantor. Cantor Barkin served
locally as cantor for Congrega-
tion Shaarey Zedek until his
retirement.
He is survived by his wife,
Mildred; son, Robert of Wash-
ington, D.C.; daughter, Penny
of San Francisco; brother,
George of Toronto; sister, Sara
Sandler of Toronto; grandchil-
dren, Craig, Robin, Richard,
Jamie; great-grandson, Devin.
