"What's really gotten me
through all of this is that I've had
a positive attitude all the way,"
he said. "I left the hospital to at-
tend Rosh Hashanah and Yom
Kippur services. HI could get into
an airplane, I would."
Would he pilot a plane again?
"You're damn right," he an-
swered.
Mr. Duer said that he is "do-
ing OK" with his injuries and
that he hopes to return to the
cockpit by summer. He said that
at first he didn't want to see the
video, but that after he watched
it, he "enjoyed it."
"Listen, you can walk out of
your house each day and not
know what is ahead of you," said
Mr. Duer. "People learn to drive
cars, but they are usually not
trained to handle emergencies."
Mr. Rappaport's demeanor is
extremely calm as he discusses
the plane crash. He's able to
watch the video without much
emotion. He laughs when he
hears the expletive of the bass
fisherman watching the falling
plane. He said he never once
thought he was going to die in the
plane crash. He only focused on
landing the plane.
Did he have any questions for
God during or after the crash?
His response:
"I regularly attended syna-
gogue before the crash, and I now
try to go almost every Saturday
after the crash. That hasn't
changed.
"I would say that I'm unlucky
to be as severely injured as I
was. Because I believe anyone
should be able to walk away
from an emergency landing." ❑
