N-

and then, unwillingly and
forcibly, to Mauritius, had actu-
ally begun months earlier in
Bratislava, capital of the puppet
state of Slovakia. There, groups
of Czech, Austrian and Polish
Jews had managed to charter a
convoy of four ships for a week-
long trip down the Danube to the
Black Sea and thence, ultimate-
ly, to Haifa.
They had suffered untold pri-
vations throughout almost three
months of sailing on the Atlantic,
an ancient Greek freighter which
had been converted, crudely and
inadequately, into a transport for
human cargo: rations as poor as
a daily allotment of tea and six
ounces of moudly biscuits; space
so limited that luckless passen-
gers could neither stretch their
limbs or lie down to sleep; hours
of queuing up for the latrines.
But morale remained high. Al-
ways ahead was the goal of the
Promised Land. There was the
exhilaration, along the voyage,
of a docking in Istanbul on the
eve of Yom Kippur and the gift
of 1,500 loaves of white bread
and other provisions from the
Jewish community of that city.
There was the setback of sabo-
tage by the Atlantic's crew, who
feared to sail into the war zone
(war had just broken out be-
tween Italy and Greece) and who
threw overboard all the ship's
fuel — coal.
And there was the response of
the young men on aboard: they
stoked the Atlantic with what-
ever wood they could salvage —
masts, chairs, beds, walls,
planks.
At the moment when the last
of the wood had been consumed,
a British man-of-war hove into
view and towed the Atlantic to
Limnos, the port city of Crete.
The passengers were overjoyed.
They had been rescued from
helpless drift at sea, they were
now under the protection of
the British flag, and the refu-
eled Atlantic would soon be sail-
ing again, to British-held
Palestine.
A day later, the refugees gath-
ered on deck to observe the sun
rising over Mt. Carmel and to
sing the "Hatikvah." They were
"home" at last!
But that was not to be. Less
than three weeks after the At-
lantic had brought the refugees
to Haifa, the Dutc.h vessels would
be depositing them in Port-Louis.
Within two days of landing, the
entire group would be conveyed
by buses to the Central British
Prison at Beau Bassin.
On Dec. 28, the iron gates of
the prison camp clanged shut be-
hind the last refugees. They
would not open for them until 55
months and two weeks later. By
then, the war in Europe would
be nearing its end. and the
British government could final-
