Professor Varda Ratter, a mem-
ber of the department of Molecu-
lar Cell Biology of the Weismann
Institute, a cancer scientist, will
be the guest of the Detroit Com-
mittee for the Weizmann Institute
of Science. Her speech, "Our
Genes That Fight Cancer," will be
heard at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Feb.
5, at a private home. Reservations
are mandatory.
Professor Rotter is best known
for her pioneering studies of the
tumor suppressor gene p53. Pro-
fessor Rotter holds the Norman
and Helen Asher Professional
Chair for Cancer Research at the
Weizmann Institute.

February and March, Aish Ha-
Torah will present a series of crash
courses designed for people who
want to learn but who have lim-
ited time to do so.
The first, Basic Jewish Con-

Are Slated

HIAS will hold a Gala Opening on

Saturday, Jan. 27, at 7:30 p.m. at
the Jimmy Prentis Morris Jewish
Community Center. A dessert re-
ception will follow.
A Gemini concert is slated on
Sunday, Jan. 28, at 2 p.m. Call

A winter dance with Ron Walk-
er will take place on Monday, Jan-
uary 29, at 1 p.m. There is a
charge.
A Tu B'Shevat Seder will be
held on Monday, Feb. 5, at 12:45
p.m. It will be conducted by David
Gultinan and accompanied by Lil-
lian Zellman. Volunteers are need-
ed to help serve. Reservations are
required; call 967-4030. There is
a charge.
